8/29: TOR @ BOS

1) Ricky Romero: 116 pitches. 9 strikes swinging. 4 Fastballs, 4 Changeups, Slider.
  • Romero came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on lefties and some sink, a change with good fade from righties and good sink that looks like a fastball out of his hand that he will throw 3-1, 3-2 and to lefties, a 11-5 slider with some bite and a 11-5 curve with slightly above average depth. Worked in and out of trouble in the first 2 innings, mainly due to him falling behind counts constantly. Fastball command can change from at-bat to at-bat and from inning to inning. He loses 2 or 3 miles per hour out of the stretch. Rarely throws a fastball 3-2, throwing either changeups or sliders.

1st: FB (91-95), CU (86-87) - 4 FB

2nd: FB (90-94), CU (85), SL (83-85) - 2 CU

Throws a lot of 1st pitch fastballs for strikes (not quality strikes, catch a lot of the plate) and will need to throw some breaking pitches for 1st pitch strikes to keep hitters off balance. After writing that, he threw a 1st pitch change to Lind that he swung right through. In the 5th inning, he lost his fastball command, but got it back in the 6th. Changeup was filthy in the 7th and 8th and he had command of it, which isn't fair for Toronto hitters. Best stuff from him I have seen all year.

8) Michael Wuertz: 17 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. 2 Sliders.

  • Wuertz is a 6-3, 205 pound righty. The 30 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He came from an over the top release and showed a straight 4-seam fastball and a sharp 2-7 slider with good bite. Solid middle reliever in the Kiko Calero mold.

9th: FB (94-95), SL (87-90)

9) Jonathan Papelbon: 21 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Splitter.

  • Papelbon came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties, a split with good fade from lefties and a 2-7 slider with some bite that he calls a slutter and it is a mix between a slider and cutter.

BOS @ TOR

1) Clay Buchholz: 103 pitches. 9 strikes swinging. 3 on Fastballs (2nd, 3rd, 6th), 5 on Changeups (2 in 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th) and a Curveball (5th)
  • Clay is a 6-3, 190 pound righty. The 24 year old has a medium frame that can add quite a bit more muscle and get up to at least 205. He comes from an over the top release with a classic drop and drive delivery. His fastball has above average run in on righties with a little sink. His change moves exactly like his fastball, just slower and serves as his out pitch. It can be flat on occasion, but he will throw it to righties. He likes to throw it away to both righties and lefties and let them swing through it. His curve is a big breaking 12-6 with above average depth and it is sharp with the ability to be a strikeout pitch. His slider is a sharp 2-7 with above average late bite. He works painfully slowly on the mound. He threw a lot of 1st pitch fastballs for strikes until they started to get more aggressive, then he worked in 1st pitch changes and curves for strikes. He can throw strikes with all his pitches and can bounce his curve when necessary. He has above average command of his 4 above average pitches, though he can leave the occasional fastball up. Still a future ace in my eyes.

2nd: FB (94-96), CU (81-82), CB (80), SL (82-84)

2) Ricky Romero: 93 pitches. 9 strikes swinging. 4 on Fastballs (3 in 3rd, 5th), 2 on Changeups (1st, 3rd) and 3 on Curveballs (2nd, 2 in 4th)

  • Romero came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on lefties, a change with good fade from righties with good sink that serves as his out pitch, a 11-4 curve with above average depth that is sharp enough to be a strikeout pitch and a 11-4 slider with good bite. At least a # 2 starter, possible ace down the road.

5th: FB (91-96), CU (84-86), SL (82-85)

3) Shawn Camp: 20 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Slider (7th), Changeup (7th)

  • He came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties with good sink, a change that moves just like his fastball with above average fade from lefties and good sink that he will throw to righties and a 2-8 slider with solid bite.

5th: FB (90), CU (83-85)

6th: FB (98-99), SL (85)

7th: FB (97-99), SL (84-88)

5) Jeremy Accardo: 13 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Cutter, Splitter.

  • Accardo came from an over the top releae and showed a fastball with some run in on righties, a cutter with good cut and a little sink and a split with good fade from lefties with some sink that he will throw to righties.

6) Hideki Okajima: 18 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball.

  • Hideki came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with a little late run in on lefties, a 12-6 curve with above average depth that is sharp enough to be a strikeout pitch and a split with some dive, but not much. The curve serves as his out pitch.

9th: FB (95-96), SL (84)

Chart Observations: FLA @ BOS

  • Brad Penny comes from an over the top release. He has a straight 4-seam fastball, a big breaking 12-6 curve with good depth and split with excellent diving action that he will throw to righties. Look at his velocity numbers below and then give the Red Sox what they want for this guy, especially if your a NL team.

1st: FB (94-98), CB (79-81)

2nd: FB (94-97), CB (77-81), Split (86-87)

3rd: FB (93-97), CB (79), Split (88)

4th: FB (94-96), Split (85-88)

5th: FB (94-96), CB (80), Split (85-86)

  • Andrew Miller comes from a high 3/4 release and showed a straight 4-seam fastball, a slurvy 11-5 slider with good bite and a straight change that looks like his fastball. He may have moved his arm slot up and is the best I have seen him this year. His fastball velocity was back and he kept the Sox off balance with changeups. Now, can he pitch this way when he isn't at Fenway?

1st: FB (91-97), SL (80), CU (87)

2nd: FB (90-95), SL (79), CU (82-85)

3rd: FB (93-96), CU (83-86)

4th: FB (91-96), SL (77-82), CU (81-88)

5th: FB (94-96), SL (76-78), CU (84)

6th: FB (92-93), SL (74), CU (82-84)

  • Justin Masterson came from a 3/4 release with a fastball that had good sink and run and sharp 2-7 slider with good bite. His change is straight and didn't look very good.

6th: FB (93-96), SL (85-89), CU (89)

  • Brian Sanches comes from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run, a split with above average dive that he will throw to righties and a sharp 2-7 slider.

6th: FB (90), SL (84), Split (81)

7th: FB (89-90), SL (84-86), Split (80-85)

  • Hideki Okajima came from an over the top release with a violent head jerk and showed a straight 4-seam fastball and a 12-6 curve with good depth and bite.

7th: FB (88-89), CB (78)

  • Ramon Ramirez came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some life, a change with excellent fade and sink, though it could be inconsistent and a sharp 2-7 slider with good bite.

8th: FB (93-96), SL (86), CU (89-92)

  • Kiko Calero comes from a high 3/4 release. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with good bite. his fastball has some sink and his change has some sink and fade. Didn't have plus (or any) command of his slider today and paid the price.

8th: FB (88-90), SL (80-81), CU (84)

  • Leo Nunez came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run and a change with excellent fade and sink.

8th: FB (95), CU (87-88)

  • Jonathan Papelbon is a 6-4, 225 pound righty. The 28 year old has a big frame that is maxed out. He comes from a high 3/4 release with a 4-seam fastball that shows some run and split with great dive. Still one of the best.

9th: FB (94-97), Split (90-91)

Relief Pitcher Repetoire Update

The 1st evaluation (FB) has been completed.

In regards to the 3 True Outcomes (BB/9, K/9, HR/9), the pitchers regressed the following:
> 85 % FB's = 68.75 % Regression
80 - 84.99 % FB's = 63.64 % Regression

And in regards to DICE:
> 85 % FB's = 57.58 % Regression
80-84.99 % FB's = 56.82 % Regression

The qualifiers in 2008 who are using 2009 as their evaluation year:
> 85 % : Grant Balfour
80-84.99: Joe Beimel, Octavio Dotel, Matt Thornton, Jonathan Papelbon

The ideal is to utilize these numbers to assign a formula to the pitcher's repetoire and use this resulting number to evaluate if their repetoire is suitable to them succeeding the next season.

NOTE: These numbers do not include penalties to pitchers for injury issues and that will be addressed after the completion of the evaluation of each individual pitch.
