Had time before my scouting trip begins this week, so decided to write up reports on as many high school players as possible for the upcoming draft.
Players would have had the chance to have video from 4 different events:
July 1 and 2 vs. Team USA Collegiate team
August 9 Area Code Games
August 13 Under Armour Game Showcase
August 14 Perfect Game Showcase
(Players played in either 8/13 or 8/14 game)
I needed at least one appearance with velocity (only games w/ velo's were the 8/13 and 8/14 games) for pitchers and 3 games of video for hitters to write them. This is why you see reports on 22 pitchers and only 12 hitters.
These are the best of the best high school players.
While the concept is still the same (draft all guys rated 35 or higher), it isn't that simple with high schoolers. To draft a high schooler, I need to see that my evaluation of his talent level matches his asking price, especially with the revised draft rules. An example of this is Carson Kelly, a 3B from Oregon. He has above average tools, but I have concerns about makeup, so I called him organizational depth. If I saw he was hustling during the spring season, he would likely be bumped to a 55. However, as of right now, I assume his asking price would be as a 55 while I value him as a 35. So, I would not draft him.
Give summaries for all players regardless of grade. Draft board is listed with all positions. Please note that I do have video on pretty much every high school player with any type of hype. If you are curious what I think of a guy I don't list (guys like Matt Smoral, Taylore Cherry, Byron Buxton, etc.) I can give a very basic report based off what I have.

Low slot righty will struggle to get RHH out. Long term fit is in bullpen. Lacks the out pitch typically seen with relievers. Upside of low leverage middle reliever.
30) RHR Yency Almonte (Columbus HS, FL) - 40
High school starter with long limbs and potential above avg FB.
Balanced. Fringy FB. Works 87-89. Loses a tick of velo from stretch. Straightens out on him, flashes solid avg run and sink. Delivery suggests avg command will be coming. Flashes ability to locate to both sides of plate. Tendency to work in middle of plate.
Fringy CB. Short 12-6 downer. Flashes gd shape w/ gd, tight spin. Struggles finishing. Flashes ability to throw for strikes or bury for strikeouts, lacks consistency.
Below avg CH. Slows arm down w/ little mvmt. Only one thrown was elevated and out of zone. Developmental pitch.
OTT from SWU. Mechanical tweaks needed to get most out of stuff. Some injury concerns with inverted W.
Tall, slender build w/ round butt. Built like a basketball player. Projectable w/ ability to be 6'4", 215 pounds.
High school starter has projectable body w/ present FB. Needs to go to college to mature into body and refine stuff. Upside of back end starter.

High school corner w/ gd tools. Close to mature mdm, athletic build w/ solid base. Gd present strength. Open, SL Crouch. Back ear hand location w/ hands in front of body. Shift of weight, long load and very mini leg kick. In load, brings hands down back to shoulder then back.
Above avg bat speed in SL Uppercut swing. Long swing that gets around the ball. Bad avg approach. Pull oriented. Hits a lot of fly balls. Avg power will be above avg. All Fields. Swings for it early in count. Struggles to recognize pitches. Needs to work on getting foot down on time. Some struggles handling velo on hands.
Below avg runner and fringy athlete. Doesn't hustle out groundballs, calling into question work ethic.
High school corner has tools, question drive to improve. Potential middle of the order bat at 3B.
32) RHS Kayden Porter (Spanish Fork HS, UT) - 35
High school starter w/ bulldog build.
Balanced. Solid avg FB. Works 88-91. Needs to tweak delivery and incorporate legs to improve velo. Run and sink. Not a lot of life. Around the zone. Hasn't shown ability to come inside consistently.
Below avg CH. Firm w/ little action. Gd armspeed gets less advanced hitters to roll over. Pro hitters will spit on it or hit it a long way. Around the zone, trusts himself to get in zone. Not always quality.
Below avg CB. Mdm 12-6 downer. Slows arm down, resulting in occasional floaters. Will get hammered in pro ball. Breaks early. Still learning to get in strike zone consistently. Tendency to back-up or elevate.
H 3/4 from SWU. Needs to incorporate legs.
Big, strong kid w/ solid base. Close to mature bulldog build.
High school starter has some tools, but needs more development. Concern would get hammered in pro ball out of high school. Like to see him go to college to refine command and improve off-speed stuff. Upside of # 5 starter.
33) LHR Matt Crownover (Ringgold HS, GA) - 35
High school lefty w/ solid avg FB velo.
Balanced. Avg FB. Works 90-91 out of windup. Loses velo out of stretch due to no backside load. Works 86-88. Run and sink. Around the zone, flashes ability to pound. Misses are elevated.
Fringy CB will be avg. Mdm downer w/ gd spin. Slurvy at times. Not an out pitch to LHH. Around the zone, not always quality. Tendency to miss up, not finish pitch.
Below avg CH will be avg. Ok armspeed w/ fade and sink. Gets gd action, but slowing down arm tips it, allowing advanced hitters to recognize. Around the zone. Shows ability to throw for quality strikes. Will pull on occasion to RHH.
H 3/4 from SWU. High effort delivery w/ a lot of moving parts. Head violence calls into question cmmd ceiling.
Small, slender build w/ ok base. Close to mature. Body type causes questions on ability to hold up as starter.
High schooler w/ gd velo from left side. Delivery is scary. Shows control now, question ability to consistently locate within strike zone. Solid org depth w/ chance to be solid avg middle reliever.
34) LHR Aaron Smith (Governor Livingston HS, NJ) - 30
High school lefty w/ above avg CH.
Finesse. Well below avg FB velo. One thrown was 80. Not much velo coming. Run and sink. Below avg mvmt w/ minimal deception. One FB thrown was down and out of the zone. Operates with zero margin for error.
Above avg CH. Gd armspeed w/ fade and sink. Appears to almost stop halfway to plate. Bugs Bunny. Not an out pitch, more weak contact pitch. Around the zone. Keeps ball down, throws a lot of strikes. Uses like FB.
Above avg CB. 12-6 mdm downer w/ tight spin. Generates swings and misses. Around the zone. Still learning how to get in strike zone.
OTT from SWU. Long arm action in back prompts injury concerns.
Small, athletic build w/ slender base. Close to mature. Concerns on starter workload.
High school lefty works slow, slower, slowest. Not quite ready for pro ball, be interested to see how stuff plays at higher level. Concerns on injury enhance these questions. Upside of emergency depth.

Appreciate this comprehensive list. Not enuf tape on Trey Williams to rank him? I have him #4 here. I do think your velos are off. You have C. Schmidt at 92-94 and Giolito at 89-92. Giolito hasn't sat that low since he was a sophmore. He's sits 94-97 now. If you were watching tape of the PGAA u should know the stadium gun was 5mph off for the first 3 innings. I had him 93-96 in that look. Stryker Trahan belongs on this list. Great body, contact and can run. Where is McCullers? I have him at #7. Size and command are only drawbacks to him being #1. Thanks much.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment. Didn't rank McCullers because the gun wasn't giving any readings during his inning. Some of the other pitchers that pitched in those games didn't get reports b/c they didn't throw a lot of pitches and didn't have a feel for them.
ReplyDeleteI had a feeling about the radar gun, as I knew McCullers velo was really low. Agree McCullers would be high (I would probably throw a 70 on him, but as a reliever, as the size you mention and there is some effort in that delivery). But, his stuff in short spurts is a difference maker in the back of the bullpen.
For Giolito, had to go with what I saw, but knew the readings were low, which is why I graded him as high as I did.
Needed 1 more game of video to do reports on Trey Williams and Stryker Trahan.
Looking at Williams 2 games I have now, definitely has bat speed. Needs to get his foot down earlier to be able to work all fields. He can handle velo, but he needs a lot of reps against gd pitching to see breaking balls. Probably throw a 55 or 60 on him, as he has the tools you look for.
I love Trahan. Fantastic bat. It is so easy stance wise and just laces line drives. Quality approach, sees spin and handles velo. My only concern for him is L on L, as he needs reps and doesn't come closed. But yea, he would be in the 60-65 range.
