8/30: SD @ FLA

1) Sean West: 89 pitches. 11 strikes swinging. 6 Fastballs, 3 Sliders, 2 Changeups.
  • West came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with a little run in on lefties and some sink that can also show some tail in on righties, a 11-5 slider with solid bite and a change with some fade from righties and some sink that he will throw 3-2 and to righties.

2) Mat Latos: 80 pitches. 9 strikes swinging. 4 Fastballs, 3 Changeups, 2 Sliders.

  • Latos came from an over the top release and showed a straight 4-seam fastball, a change that has a little sink and looks like a fastball out of his hand, a hard 2-7 slider with good bite. The ball explodes out of his hand and even when hitters sit on his fastball, they struggle to catch up to it and end up fouling it off or swinging through it. Struggles to throw the slider for strikes, but can bounce it well. Inability to throw off-speed stuff for strikes means he falls behind and has to come to hitters when behind in the count with fastballs and hitters adjust the more they see it.

His slider is a 2-7 offering with good downward bite that he will throw as a get ahead pitch and as a strikeout pitch. Can really battle his fastball command.
