Braves Extras (Plus some Mets, some Nats and a Myers)

1) Jorge Campillo: FB, CU, SL, CB
4/10: 16 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Changeup, Slider.
  • Campillo is a 6-1, 225 pound righty. The 31 year old has a medium frame that appears able to add a touch more muscle, but looks a little pudge and looks like he needs to work on toning his body rather then adding to it. He came from an over the top release that appears to put a little more pressure on his shoulder, but fairly clean. His fastball has a little run in on righties and a touch of sink. His slider is a 1-7 pitch with good bite, though it can float to the plate at times. His curve is 12-6 with above average depth. His change has some late fade from lefties and some late sink and is probably his best off-speed offering. Is a f your timing type pitcher who will throw any pitch in any count. Just doesn't have enough on his fastball to be a viable major league pitcher.

10th: FB (83-84), CU (73-76), SL (78-79), CB (69) - CU (N. Johnson), SL (Zimmerman)

2) Wil Ledezma: FB, SL, CU

4/10: 30 pitches. 8 strikes swinging. 6 Fastballs, 2 Sliders.

  • Ledezma is a 6-4, 225 pound lefty. The 28 year old has a big frame that can add a little more muscle. Big, athletic build with a somewhat thin lower half. He came from a high 3/4 release, working predominately out of the stretch, with fairly clean mechanics, though he does have a little bit of a cocking action in his arm, causing his arm action to be long. His fastball has a little run in on lefties, but is pretty straight. His slider is a 11-5 offering with solid bite. His change has a touch of sink from righties and a little sink, but is a pretty straight offering. Still has a big arm and still has command issues. Will always get chances because of his pure stuff, but I wouldn't bet on him turning it around.

4th: FB (92-95), SL (83-87), CU (82) - 6 FB (Francouer - 2, Shafer - 3, Carlyle), SL (Carlyle)

5th: FB (92-94), SL (83-86), CU (83) - SL (C. Jones)

3) Steven Shell: FB, CB, SL, Split

4/10: 10 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Fastball, Splitter.

  • Shell is a 6-4, 225 pound righty. The 26 year old has a big frame that can add a little more muscle in the lower half and is built almost the exact same as Ledezma. Strong looking lower half, but fairly thin. He came from a high 3/4 release working predominately from the stretch with no real red flags. His fastball has a little run in on righties, but doesn't have the movement typically associated with his arm angle. His split has a little dive, but doesn't do too much. His curve is a 2-7 offering with average depth that could be a strikeout pitch if located correctly. 4-A pitcher that just doesn't have enough stuff to be a consistent member of the bullpen.

6th: FB (87-88), Split (80), CB (74) - FB (Diaz), Split (Diaz)

4) Mike Hinckley: FB, CB, CU

4/10: 3 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Hinckley is a 6-3, 205 pound lefty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that is still long and lanky and can get up to at least 215 if he so desires. He came from an over the top release with a rock back and drive type of mechanics. Doesn't look like the most coordinated mechanics in the world and may prove tough to repeat consistently. His curve is a 11-5 with slightly above average depth. His fastball has some run in on lefties. Looks like he can battle his command at times, which isn't a surprise given his mechanics. LOOGY candidate, but his struggles with his command will prevent him from ever reaching his upside.

6th: FB (88-89), CB (72)

5) Kenshin Kawakami: FB, CB, Split, Cut

5/10: 95 pitches. 11 strikes swinging. 4 Fastballs, 4 Curveballs, 3 Cutters.

  • Kawakami is a 5-11, 200 pound righty. The 34 year old has a small frame that can add quite a bit more muscle, especially in the lower body and has that typical skinny Japanese build. He came from an over the top release with pretty clean mechanics and the typical Japanese pause. His fastball has some run in on righties and some sink. His curve is a slow 12-6 with slightly above average depth that can look like a fastball out of his hand, causing hitters to be well out in front that can also flash some sharpness. His split has some dive that he will throw 2-0. His cutter has some cut, but can straighten out at times. Solid # 4 or # 5 starter, but not worth the cash they paid for him.

1st: FB (88-90), CB (69-70), Split (85)

2nd: FB (88-92), CB (68-70), Split (85-87), Cut (88) - 3 FB (Ruiz, Myers - 2), 2 CB (Howard, Ruiz)

6th: FB (87-90), CB (68-73), Split (83-84), Cut (86-89) - 2 Cut (Feliz - 2)

6) Brett Myers: FB, CB, SL, CU, Split

5/10: 92 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 2 Curveballs, Fastball.

  • Myers is a 6-4, 240 pound righty. The 29 year old has a big frame that appears to be maxed out. He came from an over the top release with mechanics that add a little extra stress to his shoulder. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. His slider is a 2-7 offering with some bite. His curve is a sharp 12-6 with above average depth. His change has good fade from lefties and good sink. Velocity was down and he straight did not look very good. I do like him in the pen where his velocity has apparently picked backed up.

1st: FB (90-92), SL (86), CB (77-80)

2nd: FB (87-91), SL (84-86), CB (77-79) - CB (Escobar)

7) Jo-Jo Reyes: FB, SL, CU, CB

5/13: 56 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Slider.

  • Reyes is a 6-2, 230 pound lefty. The 24 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He came from an over the top release with pretty clean mechanics. His fastball is a straight 4-seam. His change has good fade from righties and good sink. His curve is a 12-6 with average depth. His slider is a 2-7 offering with some bite. Best case is a # 5, as he needs to refine his command. I think his arm slot is conducive to a cutter and he should explore learning one of those.

1st: FB (87-90), SL (82-83), CU (82), CB (74) - SL (Sheffield)

2nd: FB (87-89)

3rd: FB (88-90), SL (80-81), CU (82), CB (74)

4th: FB (88-89), SL (81-82), CB (72-74)

8) Jon Niese: FB, CB, Cut, CU

5/13: 73 pitches. 12 strikes swinging. 11 Fastballs, Changeup.

  • Niese is a 6-4, 215 pound lefty. The 22 year old has a big frame that can add a little more muscle to his lower body, up to about 220. Strong, athletic build. He came from a high 3/4 release. He rocks back in his mechanics and looks like he gets ahead of his arm, causing his arm to have to play catch-up. He also puts a lot of weight on his right knee, as he lands very early and puts a lot of pressure on his leg. His fastball has good run in on lefties and some sink. His change is a straight change with a little sink that looks like a fastball out of his hand. His cutter has some cut, but can straighten out. Another lefty whose upside is a # 4 or # 5 starter and who needs to continue to refine his stuff.

1st: FB (89-92), CU (82-83), CB (74) - 3 FB (Anderson, Diaz - 2)

4th: FB (88-91), CB (70-73) - 2 FB (Ross, Reyes)

5th: FB (88-91), CB (73-74)

9) James Parr: FB, CU, CB, SL

5/13: 15 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball.

  • Parr is a 6-1, 185 pound righty. The 23 year old has a medium frame that can add a little more muscle to his lower half and upper body. Should be able to get up to about 200 pound if so desired and has a lanky, athletic frame. He came from an over the top release with pretty clean mechanics. His fastball has some run in on righties and a little sink. His change has good late fade from lefties with some sink. Tweener. Not enough stuff to be a starter and doesn't have a real dominant out pitch.

9th: FB (88-93), CU (77-81) - FB (Castillo)

9th: FB (94-96), SL (87-88) - SL (Pence)

  • Tommy Manzella is a 6-2, 200 pound shortstop. The 26 year old righty/righty has a medium frame that can get up to about 215 if he so desires. Athletic, skinny build. His stance is a slightly crouched, straight on stance that is fairly generic. He has a long load and cocks the bat, almost moving it a touch forward before he moves it back. He also has a step in his trigger. Has a long swing and also lacks pitch recognition, not a good combination. On defense, he has an above average arm and soft hands. Utility player who will never hit enough to be a starter.
  • Juan Francisco is a 6-2, 180 pound third basemen who made a pinch hit appearance. The 22 year old lefty hitter, righty thrower has a medium frame that looks like it can add more muscle to his upper body. Strong lower half with an athletic build. He has an open stance where he is up on his front toe and has a little bit of a bat wiggle. His trigger is a cocking of the bat and a stride to square himself up. Kind of hunches over as he prepares to hit, which will limit his power production. Is a timing hitter, meaning he likes to guess and can look silly at the plate at times. Solid eye at the plate. Nothing I saw in his 1 at bat would lead me to believe he can't be an everday hitter.
