8th: FB (88-90), SL (76-79) - SL

6) Brad Lidge: 24 pitches. (SL, FB, CU).

  • Lidge came from an over the top release and showed a sharp 2-7 slider with above average bite and a straight 4-seam fastball.

8th: FB (93-95), SL (83-86) - 4 SL

7) Zach Segovia: 20 pitches. (FB, SL). 2 strikes swinging. 2 Sliders.

  • Segovia is a 6-2, 245 pound righty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out and doesn't appear to be carrying any bad weight. He came from a 3/4 release with a real herky jerky delivery with limbs going everywhere. His fastball has some run in on righties. His slider is a hard 2-7 with solid bite. He battled the command of both his slider and fastball and it appears it can come and go. He has the stuff to be a traditional FB-SL reliever, but needs to further refine his command.

9th: FB (92-95), SL (80-86) - 2 SL

8) Mike MacDougal: 5 pitches. (FB, SL, CB). 0 strikes swinging.

  • MacDougal came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties,

9th: FB (94-96)

9) Ron Villone: 10 pitches. (FB, SL, CU). 1 strike swinging. Fastball

  • Villone came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on lefties and a 11-5 slider with some bite.

9th: FB (89-91), SL (82-85) - FB

  • Ian Desmond is a 6-2, 210 pound shortstop. The 24 year old has a medium frame that is still pretty long and lanky. He has a straight up, open stance with a slight bat tap. His trigger has a little swaying action to it, but it is a stride to square himself up and a cocking of the bat. His back shoulder appears to drop a little in the trigger, causing him to be a little more flyball prone. He has a nice compact swing that shows gap to gap ability and also projects to have above average power for a SS. He has above average bat speed and may have above average power right now, as he hit a 430 foot bomb in this game. Defensively, his primary release point appears to be a sidearm release, which can make throws sail on him from time to time. He has an average arm and quick hands and can turn the double play quickly with good feet around the bag. He has above average speed and trusts it, causing him to make some aggressive mistakes. He has always been highly regarded as a toolsy guy and those tools have come out, though he is still a little raw defensively and offensively. I think he is a Troy Tulowitzki type package offensively with a little less average and should be right around an average defensive shortstop.

  • Johnson came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with a little run in on righties and a touch of sink, a change with some fade from lefties and good sink that he will throw to righties and a sharp 2-7 slider with good bite.

5th: FB (83-86), SL (77-78), CB (63-70)

3) Victor Garate: 25 pitches. (FB, SL, CU). 2 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs.

  • Garate is a 6-2, 210 pound lefty. The 24 year old has a medium frame that appears to be maxed out with a thick lower half. He came from a low 3/4 release with a very blatant hip turn that moves his entire body prior to release. His fastball has good late run in on lefties and a touch of sink. His slider is a 9-4 with okay bite. He had better command of his slider and struggled to finish his fastball, resulting in him leaving it well off the armside of the plate. He shows potential as a LOOGY, but won't ever be anything more then that in my opinion.

6th: FB (86-90), SL (76-79) - 2 FB

4) Cristhian Martinez: 34 pitches. (FB, CU, SL). 2 strikes swinging. 2 Changeups.

  • Martinez came from a 3/4 release and showed a change with some fade from lefties and some sink that he will throw to righties and serves as his primary out pitch, a fastball with some run in on righties and some sink and a 3-8 slider with some bite.

8th: FB (88-91), SL (84-87), CU (82) - FB

7) Jason Bergmann: 14 pitches. (FB, SL, CB, CU). 2 strikes swinging. Slider, Curveball.

  • Bergmann came from a high 3/4 release and showed a sharp 2-7 slider that moved more like a cutter, a hard sinker with good run in on righties and some sink and a sharp 12-6 curve with slightly above average depth.

8th: SL (87)

9th: FB (92-94), SL (87-89), CB (80) - SL, CB

8) Dan Meyer: 16 pitches. (FB, SL, CU, CB). 1 strike swinging. Fastball.

Chart Observations: 8/31 WAS @ SD

1) Tim Stauffer: 98 pitches. (FB, SL, CB, CU). 4 strikes swinging. 2 Cutters, Fastball, Curveball.
  • Stauffer is a 6-1, 205 pound righty. The 27 year old has a medium frame that should be able to get up to 215, mainly by adding muscle to his lower half. Athletic, skinny build. He came from an over the top, almost high 3/4 release. A little bit of a weird delivery, with the hands coming over his head and he brings his hands down quickly, causing him to wait for his leg kick to come up and then begin the drop and drive aspect. He breaks his hands a little high and has a constant bent glove elbow and throwing elbow, which might add a little more stress to his delivery. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. His curve is a sharp 12-6 with slightly above average depth. What we call a slider is actually a cutter that has solid cut and flashes some sink (confirmed to be a cutter by the Padres area scout in Virginia in an article I found). His change has good fade from lefties with solid sink that he will throw to righties. I see anywhere from a 3 to a 5 with him and would like to see him throw more curves to complement his FB/Cut repetoire. He had solid command and looks like a fairly solid prospect.

2) Livan Hernandez: 90 pitches. (FB, SL, CU, CB). 3 strikes swinging. 2 Curveballs, Fastball.

  • Hernandez came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with above average run in on righties and some sink, an absurdly slow 12-6 curve with slightly above average depth, a cutter with some cut, a change with good fade from lefties and good sink that he will throw 2-0 and a 2-7 slider with good bite.

8th: FB (83-87), CU (81), CB (58-63)

3) Adam Russell: 7 pitches. (FB, CB, CU). 0 strikes swinging.

  • Russell is a 6-8, 255 pound righty. The 26 year old has a big frame that does not look his listed weight and looks more about 230. If he is 250, it is very evenly distributed and he could get up to about 270. He came with a classic drop and drive delivery from a 3/4, almost sidearm release. Pretty clean mechanics, likes to kick his toe out on the acceleration phase, but no red flags. Fastball has a little late run in on righties. His slider is a 3-8 with some late bite, but it can be a little loopy. Max effort delivery. I like him as a reliever and think he can eventually grow into a set-up role.

7th: FB (94-97), SL (82-84)

4) Joe Thatcher: 5 pitches. (FB, SL, CU). 1 strike swinging. Fastball.

  • Thatcher came from a sidearm release and showed a fastball with some tail in on righties and a 3-8 slider with good bite.

Chart Observations: NYM @ NYY

1) Chien-Ming Wang: 85 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. Slider (1st), Splitter (3rd), Fastball (4th)
  • Wang is a 6-3, 230 pound righty. The 29 year old has a medium frame that appears to be maxed out. He comes from an over the top, almost high 3/4 release. He pauses at the top of his windup and slows down during his leg kick. His fastball is a 2-seam sinker with inconsistent movement, showing plus run in on righties with sink or being a flat pitch in the middle of the plate. His slider is a 2-7 offering with good bite. It flashes plus bite and also can be dead straight and a spinning pitch. His change has some fade from lefties and a little sink. His split has more fade and the same amount of sink as his changeup. Wang is showing signs of returning to the ace he had been prior to this season. He needs to improve his command and regain the consistency of his slider.

1st: FB (91-93), SL (83-84)

2nd: FB (91-94), Split (85-87), CU (83)

3rd: FB (92-93), Split (86), CU (82-84)

2) Livan Hernandez: 116 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Slider (2nd), Changeup (3rd)

  • Hernandez is a 6-2, 245 pound righty. The 34 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He comes from an over the top release with a quiet windup. His fastball is a 2-seam with above average run in on righties and some sink. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with some bite. His curveball is a slow, big breaking 12-6 pitch with good depth. His change has some sink and fade from lefties that he will throw to righties. He will also mix in a rare cutter in the low 80's. Solid # 5 starter who can only pitch in the NL.

2nd: FB (82-86), SL (80-81), CU (75-78)

3) Phil Coke: 6 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball

  • Coke is a 6-1, 210 pound lefty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He comes from a high 3/4 release with a 4-seam fastball wtih a little run in on righties and a 11-5 slider with good bite. Has the looks of someone who can be a multiple inning reliever, but is probably best used as a LOOGY.

6th: FB (92-93), SL (81)

4) Phil Hughes: 16 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball (7th)

  • Hughes came from a 3/4, almost high 3/4 release wiht a fastball that is a straight 4-seam, a cutter that has some cut and a power 12-6 curve with good depth.
