• Volquez is a 6-0, 210 pound righty. The 26 year old has a small frame that appears to be maxed out. He came from a high 3/4 release with a classic drop and drive delivery. He has a real long arm action, with the arm straightening out at the bottom of the arm circle and then bending again as he comes back up through the zone. His fastball has good run in on righties and good sink. His fastball is explosive and has some late giddy-up to it. His change has some fade from lefties and some sink that looks like a fastball out of his hand until its late break. His slider is a sharp 2-7 with good bite. His curve is a sharp 12-6 with average depth. Looks like an ace, but will need to come back from TJS with his stuff intact.

Really battles his command and is more of a thrower. Has the potential to be a late inning reliever, but will likely be a middle guy, as I have my doubts about him staying healthy and/or refining his command.

• Bumgarner is a 6-4, 215 pound lefty. The 20 year old has a big frame that can add a little more muscle, but he already has a strong lower half with an athletic frame. He came from a 3/4 release with a whipping arm action. A lot of stopping and starting in his mechanics. He has some cocking arm action and a slight pause at the balance point. I have my concerns about him being able to make 35 starts in a season consistenlty. Hides the ball well. His fastball has good run in on lefties and some sink. Has late giddy-up to it. His slider is a sweeping 10-5 with solid bite. The slider serves as his out pitch to both lefties and righties and he can add and subtract from it as he sees the hitter adjust. His change has some fade from righties and some sink. Hard to tell. Looks like a # 2 or # 3 starter, but may need to add a curve outside of his slider to have the variety of speeds. Would be a dominant reliver.

There may be a hitch in his swing, as when he triggers, he sometimes drops too low which messes up his bat plane and can cause a lot of weak pop-ups and grounders. 4.5 down the line on a grounder. Allen's swing path is good and he has a pretty clean swing outside of the hitch. Should be a solid gap-to-gap hitter who can provide about 15-20 home runs a season and slightly below average defense from the first base position and a .280 or so batting average.

The problem is the Royals have quite a few of these and he doesn't project to be much of a hitter. Organizational player.
• Tug Hulett is a 5-10, 185 pound 26 year old. The lefty hitter, righty thrower has a small frame that can add a touch more muscle. He has a slightly open stance and stands straight up with the bat 45 degrees over his shoulder. His trigger is a moderate leg kick and a cocking of the bat. Similar to Hernandez but doesn't appear to be as fast, but has a little more power. Hulett also may not be able to handle shortstop. He is a 4-A player.

• Max Scherzer comes from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some late run, a 2-7 slider with good bite and a change with good fade and sink that he will throw to righties. Mixed pitches very well, but can still have spurts with no control.

He will throw a straight change, as well as a fastball, from a high 3/4 release. Will throw his change to lefties. He has a classic drop and drive delivery and a 10-4 curve that is fairly slurvy. More of a guy to pitch when trailing then leading and not much of a major league pitcher.

• Roman Colon is a 6-6, 235 pound righty who didn't get an out. The 29 year old has a big frame that can add a lot more muscle. He comes from an over the top release with a drop and drive delivery. His fastball is a straight 4-seam that flashes a little run. His slider is a sharp 2-7 with good bite. Seems like he has the tools to be useful, but pitched to the middle of the plate too often. Should be a solid middle reliever.

• Kyle Farnsworth is a 6-4, 235 pound righty. The 33 year old has a big frame that has room to add a little more muscle. He comes from an over the top release with a straight 4-seam fastball that flashes run, a sharp 2-7 slider with good bite and a low 90's cutter that has good cut and a little sink. Closer stuff, middle reliever command. I wouldn't trust him with anything more then a middle reliever.

• Dan Haren (the subject of a debate on here, just glad there was some convo for a little, cough POST COMMENTS cough) was back on the hill and he comes from an over the top release. His curveball is a 12-6 with good depth, his fastball shows good fade and sink, his split shows plus dive and is a pitch he typically buries for his out pitch and his cutter has good late cut and a little sink. All his pitches are above average and they play up due to his plus-plus command, as he may have left 3 or 4 pitches in the middle of the plate all night. Still a really good # 2 starter in my eyes. If there is a modern pitcher that is comparable to Greg Maddux, your looking at him.

He throws a straight 4-seam, a 2-seam with good fade and sink, a cutter that moves like a SL and is a 11-4 type pitch, a curveball that is an 11-5 pitch with good depth and a change with sink and fade similar to his 2-seam. He is a tough guy to chart, let alone try and pick out pitches at full speed, but below is my best attempt at him.

His cutter movement is hard to see from the naked eye and looks to be fairly marginal.

Charted the 18 inning game today. Will talk about the D-Backs pitchers, then will have another post breaking down the Padres pitchers.

• Dan Haren is a 6-5, 215 pound right hander. The 28 year old has a big frame that can get up to 230 comfortably if he so desires. He comes from an over the top release and pauses at the balance point before accelerating through. His fastball is a 4-seam with some fade and a little sink. His curveball is a good 12-6 pitch with good downward movement. His splitter shows some fade and sink and served as his out pitch in this game. His cutter has come cut and sink and he appears to be throwing this pitch much more then last year. His cutter will flash slider movement. Not many pitchers can claim to have plus command, but Haren can as he was able to hit spots consistently with all his pitches. A strong # 2 starter.

• Juan Gutierrez finally had a game finishing opportunity and failed. The righty came from a high 3/4 release. His fastball is a 4-seam with some fade, his change shows good fade and sink but is just average and he throws a curve (a hard 12-6) and a slider that is just a harder curve and has slightly more horizontal movement then his curve.

• Chad Qualls allowed a home run to David Eckstein of all people to bring this game on. The 6-5, 220 pounder has a big frame that is maxed out. The 30 year old righty coems at you from a 3/4 release. His fastball shows excellent fade and sink and is a plus pitch. His slider is a sharp 2-7 offering with good bite and he is a solid closer, though he probably profiles better as a durable middle reliever to get you out of jams in the 6th-8th innings with his sinker.

• Jon Rauch came from an over the top release. His fastball is a 4-seam with natural sink. His slider is a sharp 1-7 offering with more downward movement then side to side. His change is a straight change that wasn't very impressive and his curve is a big breaking 12-6.

• Esmerling Vasquez came from a 3/4 release with a fastball that shows some good fade and sink, a change with similar movement and a slider that was a sharp, late breaking 3-8 offering. Good upside, but little command right now.

• Clay Zavada came from a 3/4 to high 3/4 release and threw pitches from both release points. The Arizona relievers combined to allow zero hits in the final NINE innings of this game and San Diego never put any real good swings on any pitches. There offense is not good outside of Adrian Gonzalez.

• Max Scherzer is a 24 year old who stands 6-3, 215. The righty has a medium to big frame that has room to add a little more muscle. He comes from a 3/4 release and has a violent head jerk in his delivery. His shoulder was flying open early and resulting him to miss to his glove side. He then tried to correct it and began missing to his arm side. His changeup shows good fade and sink and was the best I have seen it. His slider was the worst I have seen it, as he threw maybe 2 strikes with it all night. It was a tight 2-7 offering with good late bite, but he looked to be overthrowing it. His fastball showed good fade and sink and moves likes a splitter when it is right. He was all over the place command wise, but a young pitcher with stuff that moves like his will have these types of nights. Still a potential # 2.

• Kevin Correia was the opposing pitcher. The 6-3, 200 pounder has a medium to big frame that has room to add a lot more more muscle. The 28 year old right hander comes from an over the top release. He has a typical drop and drive delivery with the hands going over his head to start it. He has limbs flying around and it looks hectic around his release point. His fastball is a fairly straight 4-seam with some natural downward movement due to the nice downward plane he creates for his pitches. His slider is a 12-7 offering that is just a harder curveball. It has some bite and he has a good feel for it. He will mix in a 2-seam fastball with some fade and sink. His curveball is a big breaking 12-6 offering tha the will go to with 2 strikes against left handers as a put away pitch. His changeup has some good fade and sink. Correia's upside is a back of the rotation starter. In PETCO, he is a # 4 due to the park taking away a lot of his mistakes. He has above average command of all his stuff and did impress me with his ability to hit spots with is stuff. Could he be successful as a starter outside PETCO? I wouldn't be the team to take a chance.

It can flash slightly above average with excellent fade and sink and can act almost as a back-door 2-seam fastball. He will throw it to righties. His slider is a flat 2-7 pitch. Not a major league reliever.

• Daniel Schlereth comes from a high 3/4 release. His curveball is a power pitch with 11-5 type movement and it has good bite. The lefty has a classic drop and drive delivery. His fastball is a 4-seam with a little sink and run. He struggled to command his stuff tonight. His change shows some fade, but he left it up and doesn't look to be even average. He shows a great ability to spike his curveball, but struggled to throw it for a strike. This is his 2nd pro season and he is in the bigs, I still think he has closer potential.

• Clay Zavada comes from a high 3/4 release. His curveball is a good 11-4 offering, his change has good sink and fade and is his best off speed pitch and his fastball is a 2-seam with some fade. Solid lefty to have in a pen.

• Luke Gregerson came from a 3/4 release with a 2-seam fastball that has good fade and sink and a late breaking slider that is a 2-7 type pitch. The slider has good late movement and generated a ton of swings and misses. He is a potential set-up man.

• Jon Rauch comes from an over the top release. The righty has a 4-seam fastball that has a little sink due to the downward plane he generates for his pitches. • Hiroki Kuroda made his return from the DL tonight. The 33 year old who stands 6-1, 220 has a medium frame that has room to add more muscle. He is a right hander who attacks from a high 3/4 release with the typical Japanese windup. His fastball is a 2-seam that shows fade and a little sink, though he will mix in an occasional 4-seamer. His split shows good sink and dive. His slider is sharp and will move more like a cutter. He really struggled to find a feel for his pitches early. Most of his sliders were left belt high, but the D'Backs hitters just missed them. He was relying on more sliders then fastballs until after the 2nd, when he began to pound the zone with fastballs. Solid middle of the rotation starter when right, probably a # 4. Pitching in LA helps take away a lot of mistakes.

• Billy Buckner attacks hitters from an over the top release. This is his 3rd (of 3 starts) that I have scored. His fastball is a 2-seam with good fade and sink. His change shows the same type of movement, but on a greater scale. His curveball is a 12-6 pitch that is his key. He struggled to command it in his last outing and got hit around a little. He had great command of it today and could throw it for a strike or bury it whenever he wanted. His fastball fades late and likes to pound it on the outside corner to get strike one. He is slowly trying to convince me to turn around my thinking, but I still think he is just a 5th starter, especially pitching in the hitters' park that is Arizona.

A great middle reliever who could be in the mold of a Scot Shields and be able to throw 2 innings to get you to your closer.

• Juan Gutierrez is a big bodied (6-3, 210) right hander. The 25 year old has a medium to big frame that is maxed out and there may be some bad weight there. He comes from an over the top release. His fastball is a straight 4-seam. His slider is a tight 2-7 offering with good bite and it flashes plus as a pitch that just disappears. He can fly open and can over throw his fastball at times. He gets a great hip turn in his delivery to help him generate more velocity, though it is a high effort delivery. His change shows some sink, but it is below average. I think he adds and subtracts velocity from his slider as opposed to throwing a curveball. Set-up man is likely his ceiling and he can probably close some games down the line and not kill you.

• Brent Leach is a 6-4, 220 pound left hander. The 26 year old has a big frame that has room to add a little more muscle. He attacks from a 3/4, almost high 3/4 release. His curveball is a slurvy 10-4 offering that needs to be tightened. His changeup has decent sink and a little run (struck out Justin Upton on this pitch) and his fastabll is a 4-seam with some run. Probably fits best as a LOOGY, but he could be an inning reliever depending on how much his command (a tick below average) can catch up to his slightly above average stuff.

• Guillermo Mota attacked from a 3/4 release. His slider is a tight 2-7 offering that can be just a spinning fastball. His change shows some above average fade and some sink and his fastball has a little fade to it. I am still of the impression that he is close to being done.

• Tony Pena is a 27 year old who stands 6-2, 220. The right hander has a medium frame that is maxed out and he may also be carrying a little bit of bad weight. He attacks from a 3/4 release. His slider is a hard 2-7 offering with good bite. His fastball is a straight 4-seam. He threw a ton of sliders (more then I thought he would) and he has a max effort delivery. I like him better as a closer then Qualls, but he sure made things interesting tonight.

• Josh Whitesell is a 27 year old first basemen who stands 6-1, 225. The lefty thrower and hitter has a medium frame that is maxed out. He has a slightly open stance while standing fairly straight up. He waves the bat in a circle above his shoulder as he awaits the pitcher to begin his delivery. His trigger is a step to square himself up followed by a little bit of a toe turn. He has a little bit of a longer swing and seemed to be pretty pull happy. He showed good power in the minors, but his defense is not good around the bag (he was pulled to move Mark Reynolds to first). He failed to scoop a short hop (not an easy play, but one a big league 1Bmen not named Ryan Howard needs to make) and didn't look very comfortable defensively. His upside is that of a bench bat to me.

• Jair Jurrjens started for the Braves and attacked hitters from a high 3/4 release. His changeup showed good downward fade and sink and is his best off-speed offering and it slightly below being a plus pitch due to some inconsistencies with the break and his command of it. His slider is a sharp 3-7 pitch with good side to side movement, but inconsistent bite. His fastball flashes good fade and he actually primarily throws a moving fastball with fade, but it can be subtle at times. His slider will flash above average bite and he will also occasionally muscle up to throw straight 4-seam fastballs. He will hang sliders, but in the 5th he went to it as his put away pitch and started it on the outside corner and let the hitters flail. A # 3 starter is likely his ceiling and he is pitching at it now.

• Jon Garland opposed him. Garland attacked from an over the top release. His fastball was a 2-seam that didn't have its usual sink to it tonight, resulting in him getting pounded. His changeup showed good fade and sink and was his out pitch to left handers. His cutter showed some cut on the hands of lefties, but is just an average offering that he tends to leave up in the zone, which could be by design. He will pitch backwards and throw changes in hitters' counts. His slider was a decent bite and was a 2-7 offering. Still a solid back of the rotation starter.

• Daniel Schlereth made his major league debut last night. The first round pick from last year's draft by the Diamondbacks, he is the son of ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth. Daniel is a 6-0, 210 pound left hander who is 23 years old. He has a medium frame that is maxed out. From a high 3/4 release, he showed a fastball and curveball. His curveball is a power curve that is a hard downward breaker and is a 10-4 offering. The pitch flashes plus and made Garrett Anderson look silly with its tremendous bite. His fastball is a 4-seam that has a little run. His fastball jumps at the hitters and is explosive. Schlereth has the potential to be a closer in the mold of a Billy Wagner, relying on a fastball-curve as opposed to fastball-slider. He will likely settle in as an 8th inning guy though.

• Jeff Bennett attacked from an over the top, almost high 3/4 release. The right hander showed a 2-seam fastball that had good fade and a hard slider that had some good depth. Solid reliever, but never want him pitching late in games due to his command issues, though he had good command tonight.

• Jon Rauch attacked from an over the top release. He showed an above average 2-seam with above average fade. His curveball was a sharp 12-6er tonight with good bite and just drops off the table. His change shows good fade, but little sink and is average. His cutter showed some cut and some sink and was an above average pitch tonight, though it is normally just average. Middle reliever that I personally wouldn't want being my 8th or 9th inning guy, but should be fine in the 7th.

• Peter Moylan attacked hitters from a sidearm, almost submarine release point. His fastball shows little fade and sink and the amount of movement was inconsistent from pitch to pitch. He never had good feel for his slider, leaving them all armside and down and well off the plate. He continues to battle his command and seems to be struggling to find a consistent release point. Decent ROOGY, but he has been unimpressive each time I have seen him.

7th: FB (88-92), SL (77-78)

• Eric O'Flaherty is the Braves LOOGY who attacks from a high 3/4 release. He has the potential to be more (a full inning reliever) with a fastball that is a straight 4-seam and a slider that is a sweeping 10-4 pitch that he can also tighten into a sharper breaking slider.

• Rafael Soriano attacked hitters from a high 3/4 release. His fastball is a straight 4-seam. He will throw a few hanging sliders, but it is a good 2-7 pitch. Throws both a hard slider (when ahead in the count, as a strike out pitch) and a soft slider that he prefers to use to get strikes 1 or 2.

• Clay Zavada attacked hitters from a high 3/4 release. The lefthander will also drop down to 3/4 on occasion. His changeup is an above average offering, but didn't show much tonight. His fastball was a straight 4-seam. His slider is a sweeping 10-4 pitch.

9th: FB (87-89), SL (73-74), CU (81-82)

• Mike Gonzalez attacked hitters from a 3/4, almost high 3/4 release. His fastball is a straight 4-seam. his slider is sharp and is a 10-5 pitch. He throws 2 different sliders, a slurvy one to get strike 1 and then a hard one to get the strikeout. He hides the ball very well and tries to disrupt hitters timing as much as possible.

Gonzalez Inning By Inning:

9th: FB (91-95), SL (77-85)

• Justin Upton is locked in. He has plus power and seems to have a plan at the plate every time he steps up. I didn't think his super stardom would be here so soon, but it has arrived. Watch this kid at the plate and you have a guy who knows he is going to hit the ball hard every time. He is beginning to be pitched much harder now that he has been other worldly lately and this will be his next adjustment.

SD vs. ARI

• Jake Peavy is a 28 year old who is 6-1, 195. The right hander has a medium frame that can add a little more muscle. From a 3/4 release, he showed a fastball at 89-93, a slider at 80-85, a curveball at 78-80, a change at 81-86 and a cutter at 84-86. His slider shows good late bite and flashes as a plus 2-7 pitch. His fastball shows above average fade and is a hard 2-seamer. His change shows decent fade and sink. His cutter has some cut, but not a whole lot. His curveball is a mini 12-6 that is fairly sharp. He has a high effort delivery and will also drop down and throw fastballs and sliders from sidearm. In my eyes, Jake Peavy is no longer a # 1. He has settled in as a very good # 2 starter and he isn't a good fit for bandboxes. Still a good pitcher, just not an ace.
• Billy Buckner attacked hitters from an over the top release with a fastball at 85-91 (sat at 88-90), a curveball at 75-82 and a change at 80-86. His fastball has above average fade and some sink. His change shows good fade and sink and looks to be an above average offering. His curveball is a 12-6 pitch that he struggled to get a feel for early (threw quite a few hangers), but was able to command it better later. He will throw any of his pitches to any batter in any count. Still looks like a back of the rotation starter to me.
• Clay Zavada attacked from a 3/4, almost low 3/4 release with a fastball at 87-89, a slider at 74 and a change at 77-81. His change is a straight change with some sink and was his main off-speed pitch tonight. His fastball has a little run, but not much. His slider is a frisbee 10-4 pitch. His command was somewhat spotty as well. Still think he could be a decent inning reliever, but the lack of velocity on his fastball will always be hurting him and he doesn't have a real go-to pitch against lefties.
• Leo Rosales is a 27 year old who stands 6-1, 205. The right hander has a medium frame that is maxed out. From an over the top release, he showed a fastball at 86-89, a slider at 80-85 and a change at 79-83. His fastball is a straight 4-seam. His slider has good downward bite and is an 11-7 offering. His changeup shows good fade and movement and is slightly above average. Rosales can have very spotty command and this is what got him in trouble tonight. A middle reliever if he can be consistent with his command and a 4-A player if he doesn't, it really is that simple.
• Luke Gregerson attacked from a low 3/4 with a fastball at 89-91 and a slider at 80-81. His fastball is a 2-seam with good fade while his slider showed good downward movement.
• Drew Macias is a 26 year old outfielder who is 6-3, 200. The lefty hitter and thrower has a medium to big frame with room to add a little more muscle. He has a slightly open stance that is very similar to that of Chris Coghlan. He moves the bat in a circle a little bit as he waits for the pitcher to deliver. Macias looks like a 4th OF, as his swing doesn't have great power potential and he was unable to show any speed as he struck out in his only plate appearance.
• Esmerling Vasquez showed a fastball at 93-96, a slider at 79-80 and a changeup at 83-88 from a high 3/4 release. The fastball is a straight 4-seam. The slider is a 2-7 type pitch that showed good bite, but not great. The changeup is fairly straight with some sink and used it to battle the Padres lefty sticks. His slider is his most promising off-speed offering and he will need to further develop it to reach his potential. He showed average command and pitched to the middle of the plate a little too much.
• Edward Mujica showed a fastball at 91-94, a slider at 82-85 and a splitter at 87-88 from a high 3/4 release. His fastball is a straight 4-seam. His split showed great bite and solid fade. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with decent bite. He needs another pitch to complement his fastball and his splitter looks like his best option. Both his off-speed pitches are inconsistent with break and command. He has above average command of his fastball.
• Jon Rauch showed a fastball at 88-93 (mostly at 91), a slider at 82, a curveball at 73-74 and a changeup at 86. His fastball has good sinking movement and some fade. His curveball is a 12-6 pitch that is a little loopy. His slider is a 1-7 offering that goes nearly straight downward. He also threw a straight change. Solid middle reliever, but not a set-up man, as he has no true out pitch.
• Greg Burke featured a fastball at 89-91 and a slider at 81-83. His fastball shows great late and a little sink and he has plus command with it, as he peppered the outside corner at the knees with it. His slider is a little loopy for my taste and is a 3-8 offering. He needs to get more consistent with his slider.
• Heath Bell is a 6-3, 250 pound behemoth for a closer. The 31 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. From an over the top release, he threw 2 pitches: a fastball at 93 and a curveball at 83. The curveball was a 12-6 pitch that was very sharp. His fastball was a straight 4-seam.

Will only be doing reports on the starting pitchers tomorrow so I can get through all the games.
