• Benson is a 6-4, 205 pound righty. The 34 year old has a big frame that can add a lot more muscle and looks the exact same as when he was drafted. He came from an over the top release with pretty clean mechanics. His fastball has a little run in on righties. His cutter has some cut, but can straighten out. His change has good sink and some fade from lefties that he will throw to righties. His slider is 2-7 with some bite. Benson looked done and none of his pitches were very good.

• Eyre is a 6-2, 205 pound righty. The 31 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out with a thick lower half. He came from an over the top release with fairly clean mechanics and no real red flags. His fastball has some run in on righties and some sink. His slider is a sharp 2-7 offering with some bite, but not a real big breaker and he will throw it 3-2. Looks like he could be a solid middle reliever, but the lack of bite in his slider will make it hard for him to be solid all season.

3) Warner Madrigal: FB, SL, Split

6/2: 39 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs.

• Madrigal is a 6-0, 200 pound righty. The 25 year old has a small frame that can add a little more muscle in the upper body. Squatty build. He came from an over the top release in a classic drop and drive delivery with no real red flags, though it is a high effort delivery. He will both slide step and leg kick at any time to mess with a hitter's timing. His fastball is a pretty straight 4-seam that can flash some run in on righties and flash some sink. His split has some diving action. His slider is a 2-7 with a little bite. He can battle his command at times, primarily of his fastball. He is young to pitching, but I usually like to see a higher velocity fastball from convertees, as it is usually difficult for them to find a consistent off-speed offering. I think Madrigal will wind up being a classic 4-A guy. He needs to really tighten his slider and improve his strike throwing ability.

4) Brandon McCarthy: FB, SL, CU, CB

5/24: 124 pitches. 7 strikes swinging. 3 Sliders, 2 Fastballs, Curveball, Changeup.

• McCarthy is a 6-7, 200 pound righty. The 26 year old has a big frame that is real long and lanky and extremely skinny. He can get up to at least 215 comfortably if he so chooses. He looks like a twig out there. His mechanics appear to put extra pressure on his shoulder, as he really over rotates that shoulder and has a moderate head jerk. It looks like his arm is playing catch-up to the rest of his body. Max effort delivery that has me question if he can ever get through a season fully healthy as a starter. He came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with good natural sink due to him generating a good downhill plane for his pitches and some run in on righties. His "slider" is really just a power 12-6 sharp curve with above average depth. He can over throw it at times and he has the confidence to throw it for strikes. His change looks like a fastball out of his hand and has some fade from lefties and some sink. His curve is a 12-6 that isn't as sharp or as hard, but has plus depth. The curve appears to be his out pitch and he has good enough command of the pitch to throw it for strikes or bounce it at will. McCarthy looks like he should be a solid # 3 or # 4 starter when he pitches, but I would never count on anything more then 20 starts out of him.

He came from a high 3/4 release and showed a little cocking action when the arm is at the bottom of the arm circle, but nothing too serious. His fastball has some run in on righties and a little sink. His change is a straight change that isn't very good. His curve is a power 1-7 offering with slightly above average depth. He appears to have the stuff to be a solid middle reliever, though he should only face the occasional lefty.

• Moscoso is a 6-1, 165 pound righty. The 25 year old has a medium frame that can add a lot more muscle, though he does look to be about 175 or 185 as opposed to 165. He can add muscle to both his lower and upper body and has an athletic build. Classic drop and drive delivery where he lands hard on his front leg and kind of kicks it out. He came from a high 3/4 release. His fastball has a little run in on righties. His curve is a flat 2-7 with below average depth that really doesn't do much. He has a tendency to lose it to his armside, flattening it out even more. He was fairly unimpressive in this outing, but could project into a solid middle reliever if he can sit in the 92-94 range with his fastball.

7) Josh Rupe: FB, SL, CU, CB

4/10: 38 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Fastball, Slider.

• Rupe is a 6-2, 210 pound righty. The 27 year old has a medium frame that can add muscle to get up to about 220 if he so desires. He has a real thin lower half with small thighs that shows a lot of room to add muscle. He came from a high 3/4 release with a cocking arm action and is a slinger. He is another Rangers pitcher that does the kick out thing with his front leg. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with solid bite. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. He does not have good command of his fastball. His curve is a 12-6 offering with above average depth. His change has some fade from lefties and some sink. He has the stuff to be a big league reliever in the mold of a Doug Mathis, he just does not have the command.

He will throw it in any count and will throw it to righties and it is the offspeed offering he has the most confidence in. He had solid command of his curve and change, but his fastball command was spotty and he only showed an ability to bounce the splitter. Is extremely slow to the plate (1.6 on a FB and stolen base) and doesn't give the catcher much of a chance on steals. He needs to incorporate a slide step or lower his leg kick. He looks like he could be a # 3 starter again, but he finds himself back in injury hell.

As a team, this is a great guy to have in AAA to make some spot starts or fill gaps during an injury period, but that is the extent of his value.

He puts a lot of effort in his shoulders and has a pretty high effort delivery with a moderate head jerk. His fastball has some run in on lefties and a little sink. His slider is a 11-5 offering that kinds of hangs and is slurvy with slightly below average bite, but it does flash above average bite with good downward action. His change is straight, but looks like a fastball out of his hand and should be able to get hitters to flail at it and he will throw it to lefties and in any count. His curve is a 11-5 offering with below average depth, but shows potential. He can battle his command, especially with the fastball, and it can change from hitter to hitter. He did not look great in this start, but he showed all the tools. He has a plus change, will have a plus fastball and just needs to tighten up his command and tighten his breaking pitches. Should be a # 2.

His change has some fade from lefties with solid sink that he will throw to righties. Another 4-A guy who really does not slot anywhere.

• Swarzak is a 6-4, 225 pound righty. The 24 year old has a big frame that doesn't look as big as his listed weight and can add more muscle to his lower body. Athletic build. Drop and drive delivery with a high 3/4 release and a little bit of a slinging arm action. Sinkerballer. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. His change moves just like his fastball, with good fade from lefties and some sink that he will throw to righties and at any count. Can battle his sinker command at times. His curve is a hanging 1-7 offering that just yells hit me. It has average depth. It improved later on and showed above average depth that was somewhat sharp with a 12-6 break. He has solid command of his off-speed stuff, though he has a tendency to leave them up in the zone. He carries his velocity well through a game. I think his upside is a # 4 starter, as I think he has less command and stuff then both Nick Blackburn and Kevin Slowey.

He came from a high 3/4 release with mechanics very similar to Scot Shields with a classic drop and drive delivery. They are pretty clean. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. His slider is a 2-7 offering with some bite that can flatten out. Can battle his fastball command at times and fly open, causing the ball to miss gloveside. He looks to have the stuff to be a solid middle reliver down the road. He needs to tighten up his mechanics and work on staying closed while also tightening his slider and making it more consistent.

Mechanics appear to be pretty clean. His fastball has some run in on righties and some sink. His cutter has some cut, but can straighten out at times. His curve is a 1-7 with below average depth that has some sharpness to it. His change has a little fade from lefties and a little sink. Doesn't look like much. Think he is a better fit in the rotation then as a reliever.

• Stauffer is a 6-1, 205 pound righty. The 27 year old has a medium frame that should be able to get up to 215, mainly by adding muscle to his lower half. Athletic, skinny build. He came from an over the top, almost high 3/4 release. A little bit of a weird delivery, with the hands coming over his head and he brings his hands down quickly, causing him to wait for his leg kick to come up and then begin the drop and drive aspect. He breaks his hands a little high and has a constant bent glove elbow and throwing elbow, which might add a little more stress to his delivery. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. His curve is a sharp 12-6 with slightly above average depth. What we call a slider is actually a cutter that has solid cut and flashes some sink (confirmed to be a cutter by the Padres area scout in Virginia in an article I found). His change has good fade from lefties with solid sink that he will throw to righties. I see anywhere from a 3 to a 5 with him and would like to see him throw more curves to complement his FB/Cut repetoire. He had solid command and looks like a fairly solid prospect.

Pretty clean mechanics, likes to kick his toe out on the acceleration phase, but no red flags. Fastball has a little late run in on righties. His slider is a 3-8 with some late bite, but it can be a little loopy. Max effort delivery. I like him as a reliever and think he can eventually grow into a set-up role.

Royals Extras (and Carlos Silva)

1) Sidney (Prince of Aruba) Ponson: FB, SL, CU, CB
5/6: 85 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball.

• Ponson is a 6-1, 260 pound righty. The 32 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out with a lot of bad weight in the lower body and he has an extremely thick lower half. Also appears to have a little bit of a gut. He came from a high 3/4 release in a fairly clean delivery, though he lands hard on his front foot which isn't a good thing at his weight. His fastball has some run in on righties and some sink. His curve is a sharp 12-6 with average depth that has good downward action to it. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with good bite. He throws a lot of 2-seamers and doesn't throw many off-speed offerings. His change has some fade from lefties and a touch of sink. Ponson generated virtually zero swinging strikes, meaning he wasn't fooling anybody. His fastball is solid, but none of his other off-speed offerings are very good. I would like to see him as a 1-inning reliever and given a shot there, but he just may get arrested if I told him that because he would probably punch me.

He has a classic drop and drive delivery that is real slow in the beginning, but no real red flags mechanically. His fastball has good run in on righties and good sink. His change has some fade from lefties and some sink that he will throw to righties and his go-to offspeed offering. Almost looks like he guides the ball in there and that there may be some more velocity there in shorter spurts. His command is not as good as it used to be and catches a lot of the middle of the plate with his sinkers. He can still force a lot of groundballs. Silva's best case is a # 5 starter for a great infield defensive team, so the Mariners are his best fit to have a chance at salvaging his career.

His fastball is a pretty straight 4-seam that flashes some run in on righties. His slider is 2-7 with some mythical bite, as it sure looked pretty straight... His splitter has above average fade from lefties and a little sink. Another 4-A reliever whose combo of straight pitches will not allow him to get major league hitters out.
