• Niemann came from an over the top release and showed a fastball that is very straight that may have a little cut to it, a sharp, big breaking 12-6 curve with excellent depth that can be a strikeout pitch (and serves as his out pitch) and a sharp 2-7 slider with good bite. He straightens his arm behind him on the back take before beginning his acceleration through. Very impressive tonight and his curveball was plus for most of this outing.

He also showed a straight 4-seam fastball and he has an excellent pick off move. He sold me tonight and retired the last 15 hitters he faced. Definite shot at being a # 2, but more likely to be a # 4.

• Jason is a 6-5, 220 pound righty. The 36 year old has a big frame that can get up to about 235, but likely won't. He comes from an over the top release. His fastball has some run in on righties. His split has some dive, but not a ton. His curve is a sharp 12-6 with above average depth that can be a strikeout pitch and that he can throw for strikes at will. Don't really know how the Reds didn't hit him harder after the 1st. He did a great job of living on the edges and throwing his slow curve for strikes, but his velocity is nowhere near where it used to be. A guy who profiles as, at best, a # 5 and that may even be a stretch.

Clippard is likely going to be a solid middle reliever, but he isn't going to be a guy who dominates and middle reliever is his likely ceiling.

He has plus command that causes his pitches to play up. Don't listen to Buster Olney about fastballs, his main pitch is his cutter, though it can look like his fastball at times. It is amazing how often he stays away from the middle of the plate and generates weak contact with cutters on his gloveside (in on lefties, away from righties).

Brews-D'Backs Make Incomplete Deal

The Brewers traded Cole Gillespie and Roque Mercedes to the D'Backs for Felipe Lopez.

Brewers Side: The Brewers pick up a utility player in Lopez in the midst of a career year (again). Lopez is currently hitting .305-.368-.416 as the D'Backs everyday 2Bmen. Moving to Milwaukee, he likely will take the same role. Is this truly an upgrade? Looking at stats, you would say yes, however lets look deeper. This acquisition either pushes Casey McGehee (continuing his torrid hitting at .310-.341-.452 in July) or Mat Gamel (who needs AB's) to the bench. This also means Counsell will have to break out of his slump (or regression to the mean depending on your view) with sporadic pinch hit AB's. Lopez is also likely going to lead off and with a net OBP of just .63, if he suffers any drop in batting average or luck, his value will be diminished.

D'Backs Side: Gillepsie (24) inexplicably made a jump from High A (.349-.431-.605) to AAA (.242-.332-.424). If I were the Diamondbacks, I send him to AA and let him hit around .260-.270 and get acclimated to the organization as you try to teach this kid some pop so that he can be a corner outfielder. Mercedes (22) is a reliever in High-A and has a 1.08 ERA in 41.2 IP, racking up 45 strikeouts against 15 walks. Both these prospects have some potential, but are likely 2 Grade C prospects.

Analysis: Yes, the Brewers have improved themselves. However, they just dealt 2 assets to the Diamondbacks (that the Diamondbacks obviously liked) and did not fill their biggest need (starting pitching). This means the D'Backs price on Doug Davis (who the Brewers must have inquired about) is either exorbitant or the Brewers have a better option. I am not a big fan of this acquisition for Milwaukee, he has always been a + .60 OBP guy, which is useful, just not as a lead off hitter. They didn't give up much in sure things, but Gillespie has always been able to command the strike zone (though I doubt he shows enough to be an everyday guy) and should be able to fill in as a bench guy down the road. Mercedes, who knows? I will give the win to the Brewers, just because they didn't have to give up a possible everyday player to get one back./

O's - Pads Trade: Huh?

The Orioles traded Oscar Salazar to the Padres for Cla Meredith.

Orioles Side: Baltimore picks up Meredith, a 26 year old Chad Bradford wannabe. Meredith's #'s are not good, a 4.17 ERA, 47 hits, 13 walks and 20 strikeouts in 36 and 2/3 innings. Think about that. You are asking him to now go from the most forgiving ballpark in the league (though he may not have been built for it, being a sinkerballer) to one of the toughest divisions to get out some of the better right handed hitters in a game. Maybe the Orioles see something in him.

Padres Side: San Diego picks up Salazar, a 31 year old Venezuelan. Salazar's bat hasn't been a question (with BAL: .419-.455-.613 in 31 AB's, with AAA: .372-.408-.618 in 199 AB's) but where do you play him? At 6 feet, he isn't an ideal 1B. He didn't get much of a chance at 3B and has played a bunch of positions in his time. However, he now goes from a tougher league to a much tougher home park. They may see him as a bench bat, because he still doesn't have an everyday spot unless they move Adrian Gonzalez (uh huh) or Kevin Kouzmanoff (possible, has been shopped).

Analysis: Huh? The Orioles, who have a plethora of starting pitching prospects that will need to some go into the pen, such as, in my opinion, Brandon Erbe, Jason Berken, Brad Bergesen (who I think IS Cla Meredith stuff and deception wise) and Kam Mickolio. Meredith may be auditioning for a job. Meanwhile, San Diego gets a 31 year old bat who is fairly unproven and the best they can likely hope for is something similar to David Newhan's 2004 season (.311-.361-.453). Some of you read that and are thinking, wait Tim, that is pretty good. Sure, if your a contender, however the Padres are at least 2 years from competing and maybe more depending on the Peavy situation. 2 years later, Newhan hit .252-.298-.374. Sound like a contributing player? Seems like a good idea to trade a 26 year old reliever for a 31 year old utility player. I will give a slight win to the Orioles.

Baker's stuff plays up due to his above average command. Solid # 4 starter.

He can throw strikes with all his pitches and can bounce his curve when necessary. He has above average command of his 4 above average pitches, though he can leave the occasional fastball up. Still a future ace in my eyes.

Best Futures Game Coverage on the Net!

I guarantee you will not find better scouting reports for ALL the players who played in the Futures Game this past All-Star Break then what you are about to read, if you so choose.

I watched the Futures Game on tape and have put my reports for every prospect (our recording stopped prior to the bottom of the 7th and have been unable to find another version to watch the end, so no Juan Carlos Sulbaran or any of the batters he faced).

To get these scouting reports exact, I watched each half inning twice. The 1st time, I focused on the pitcher, his mechanics, his arm action and his pitches. The 2nd time, I focused on the hitters, carefully studying their swing mechanics, setups, bat speed and the type of pitches they were putting in play and how well.

You will also notice as you scroll down (read below for each individual player) that I didn't give a final grade for any of the players. What I have done is tried to provide you with all the information about the player and will leave it to you to make a decision on a player. I feel a scouts job isn't to be able to expertly dissect talent, but rather write reports that provides your boss with enough information to make an informed decision come draft time, trade time or free agent time.

Eric Young Jr.: Colorado Rockies (18). S/R. 5-10, 180. 24 yr old. Small frame that can add a little more muscle and probably around 190-195 without losing speed. Stance is a slightly open with a little crouch and leans back on his back leg to keep his weight back. Also has a little bat wiggle action. Trigger is a step to square himself up and a cocking of the bat. Good line drive swing with solid bat speed. May have a hitch in there with the cocking and then dropping his hands, but that would only affect his ability to hit for power and he will never hit for much. Then, right after I wrote that, he took Samuel's FB deep, about 385. Good fielding mechanics at 2B, looks like he could be inconsistent with his accuracy with his arm slot. Good hands and good feet around the bag on the double play. Comparable to Chone Figgins with the ability to put a charge in a ball once in awhile and think that is a very good comparison.

AB's
1) K Swinging. Chased a FB way out from Feliz and looked overmatched in his AB.
2) HR to RCF. Fliner Fly Hard that he got all of. Pitch was a fastball on the outside corner that Young just hit hard.
3) BB. Worked a 6-pitch walk, though he didn't take any real borderline pitches.

Jemile Weeks: Oakland Athletics (9). S/R. 5-10, 175. 22 yr old. Small frame that can probably get up to 185. (LH) Straight on, straight up stance with his hands held back behind him. Almost looks like Ken Griffey Jr. minus the bat wiggle. Trigger is a double step and a cocking of the bat. Shows excellent bat speed and definitely has a very good profile. Trigger is a stride and cocking of the bat. Good looking bat speed. Plus runner who knows how to use it, as he stole 2 bases.

Stance is open with a crouch and almost rests the bat on his shoulders, wiggling it up and down above the shoulder. Trigger is a stride to square himself up when the pitcher starts his delivery, a bigger leg kick when the pitcher is getting close to release and a slight cocking of the bat. Swung through a 2-0 fastball that he was sitting on (98 miles per hour). Shows a good ability to command the strike zone and looks for pitches he can drive early in the count. Good plan at the plate. Above average bat speed. Barely average arm for third and kind of short arms the ball to 1st. Interesting to see what will happen with him.

Good looking bat speed. Really struggled to hit off-speed stuff. Not too much defensive prowess and didn't show much of an effort on a throw into the baserunner to try and snag it. Looks to be a below average defender and really struggles to read hops and make adjustments.

2) P-6. Was fed sliders and struggled to resist, chased 2 of the 3, with the 3rd being a pop out. Soft fly to shallow CF.

Trigger is a a cocking of the bat (which moves it back towards his body) and a stride. Swing can get long at times, but stays inside the ball very well and shows very good bat speed.

1) 1B to RF. Got a fastball on the inner third and turned on it very well, lacing a hard line drive between the 3-4 hole.

Trigger is a stride and sometimes his weight can come forward too much and he is left swinging with just his arms. Chased a 0-1 slider from Flande. Shows plus raw power.

1) Singled on a hard groundball up the middle. Fastball that Flande left towards the inside of the outer third of the plate and he didn't miss it.

Breaks hands fairly high, which puts extra stress on his shoulder. Glove comes high and covers the release point until the last second. Fastball has some run in on righties and a little sink and looks to have a little extra "oomph" to it at the end. Likes to throw his fastball to the armside corner (in on lefties, out on righties) Curveball is a big breaking 12-6 with above average depth and is sharp. It can be a strikeout pitch and it serves as his out pitch. Did not show an ability to bounce the pitch, but could throw it for a strike at hitter's knees at will. Changeup has some fade from lefties and good sink. He will throw the pitch with a 2-0 count and to righties. Change can be dead straight at times. Threw a 40 foot change that bounced and hit Weglarz, really inconsistent with it in this outing. Has solid above average command right now with his fastball and curve, but below average with his change.

Slider is a 2-7 with good bite. Changeup has some fade from lefties with a little sink, but can be flat and straight. Curveball is a 12-6 with good depth and is sharp enough to be a strikeout pitch. Showed above average command of both his fastball and curve, bounced his slider though it generated a swing and miss and left the change high and away from Durango.

Has a very slow leg kick that slows down his momentum from the start and then drops and accelerates through, generating max velocity. Arm action is similar to Jimenez where he brings the arm straight down without bend and then bends as he accelerates through, which I think has to put a little extra strain on his elbow. Fastball has some run in on lefties. Change is a straight change that looks just like a fastball out of his hand and is an above average pitch. Will throw changes in hitters counts and any count. Slider is a sweeping 10-4 with solid bite. Showed plus command of his fastball, working it to both corners, above average command of his change and threw his 1 slider up near the middle of the plate.

Generates good deception, but the arm action worries me and looks to put a lot of pressure on his shoulder. Fastball has good run in on righties with good sink. His slider is a 2-7 that is kind of slurvy, but has good downward action to it. Showed above average command of his fastball and bounced the only slider he threw on a 1-1 count.

Can throw some hangers. Change has some fade from righties, but is a work in progress. Will throw the pitch to lefties in 3-1 counts. Showed average command of his FB-CB combo and missed on the only change he threw.

Extremely clean delivery from the stretch. Fastball has good run in on righties with a little sink. Slider is a sharp 2-7 with good late bite. Showed above average command of both his offerings.

Over the top release. A little bit of herky jerky in his delivery with limbs moving all over the place. Fastball has good looking late run in on lefties. Change is fairly straight with some late fade from righties and left it up quite a bit. Is his preferred pitch 1-1, as he threw it in that count twice. Slider is a sharp 11-4 with above average bite and caught Castro off guard, resulting in a WP. Slider is definitely major league ready and has the potential to be a dominant out pitch. Showed above average command of his 2 pitch arsenal (FB-SL), but his change was left in the left handers batters box pretty often.

His trigger is a cocking of the bat and a stride that is more of a leg kick and appears to go down right where it was initially setup. Good looking hitter with good bat speed and appears to have the ability to control the strike zone and shows some bat control. Above average arm defensively. Will look to bunt for hits and appears to be about average at it right now.

1) Infield single to catcher. Speed (4.18 to 1st) beat the throw and he moved to 2nd on a throwing error. Pitch was a curve on the inner third at his knees.

Trigger is a quick, small stride to square himself up and a little cockin of the bat. Will look to bunt for hits. Plus-plus speed and stole 2 bases in this game, once on a Matusz pick off where he beat the throw to 2nd and then stole 3rd without a throw.

Looked pretty bad on a changeup and looks like a hitter who will struggle against pitchers that can change speeds well. Looks like he tries to pull everything and struggles on pitches on the outside corner. Does have the ability to go the other way with 2 strikes on him.

1) Line drive single to RF. Medium hit ball that fell just in front of Jason Heyward. Pitch was a fastball on the outer third of the plate.

He looks like a guy who will be packing some power as he gets used to the advanced level of pitching. Error was on a bad throw and appeared to take it a little lackadaiscally.

As his trigger, he brings his foot to straighten himself out and then as the pitch is coming he strides and he also cocks the bat. Good quick swing that shows power to all fields (at the very least projectable power to all fields). Can get over aggressive at times. Shows a strong arm behind the plate and better fundamentals, but can be a little slow getting the ball out. A little cocking action to his throws.

1) FC 5-4. Weak groundball that he rolled over on. Pitch was a curve down at his knees and he was fooled and just tried to hit, as his bat speed was noticeably slower on that pitch. 4.73 down the line.

Similar to Pablo Sandoval to me with his setup. Controls his at bats very well. Strong arm behind the plate with a little cocking action that slows him down just a touch.

Nick Weglarz: Cleveland Indians (3). 6-3, 245. L/L. 21 yr old. Big frame that is pretty maxed out and he is a big, strong dude. He looks like a linebacker as opposed to an outfielder. He has a slightly open stance with a little crouch and has both elbows up and the bat basically over his head at a 60 degree angle. Trigger is a stride to even himself up and a cocking of the bat. Shows above average bat speed and good raw power potential.

1) Hit by Pitch. Didn't lean into it or anything, just nothing he could do.
2) 5-3. Weak groundout to third on a fastball at the knees.
3) F-7. Fastball at his knees on the outside corner that he hit a fliner fly about 10 feet shy of the warning track in left (oppo).

Kyeong Kang: Tampa Bay Rays (27). 6-2, 200. L/L. 21 yr old. Medium frame that can get up to at least 220. Stance is similar to that of Matt Stairs. He is slightly open and a little straight up with his hands holding the bat almost in front of his body almost even with his back shoulder. Trigger is a cocking of the bat and a stride where the leg appears to go in a circle. Swing is similar to that of Akinori Iwamura.

1) Popped out to pitcher. Fastball was in on his hands and popped it up.

2009 Stats:

Brett Lawrie: Milwaukee Brewers (3). 5-11, 200. R/R. 19 yr old. Small frame that can add a little more muscle, but not much. Built kid. Stance is open with a crouch and hands held in front of his back shoulder in front of his body. Think Jeff Bagwell is he was more open and not as crouched. Trigger is a cocking of the bat and a little bit of a leg kick with his stride foot coming close and then extending towards the pitcher, similar to a pitcher with a drop and drive delivery. Swing can get long and looks like the bat goes in a circular motion, definite hitch in there. He cocks the bat, and then drops it and then starts his swing, a lot of wasted motion.


AB's
1) Weak groundout to 1st. 4.18 down the line and shows good speed. Fastball on the outside corner.
2) F-7. Medium fly to Heisey in LF. Fastball on the inner third and in the middle of the inner 3rd belt high. Latos got away with one.
3) 2B. Got a change belt high on the outside corner and ripped a fliner fly to the left field warning track, just missing a wall ball.


2009 Stats:

Wilmer Flores: New York Mets (2). 6-3, 175. R/R. 17 yr old. Big frame that can get up to at least 205. Looks extremely thin right now and is purely projectably. Stance is fairly straight and straight up. Trigger is a stride and a cocking of the bat. Looks like he could be a future stud and shows average bat speed right now. A little over aggressive, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a 17 year old. Did not run real hard out of the box. Not a hustler. Not the most agile fielder in the world and looks like he is still trying to get used to his body.


AB's
1) 4-3. Medium to slightly hard grounder hit to Young. Pitch was a fastball down at his knees on the outside corner in a 1-0 count.
2) 6-3. Medium grounder right at Espinosa for an easy 6-3.

2009 Stats:

Starlin Castro: Chicago Cubs (7). 6-1, 160. R/R. 19 yr old. Medium frame that can add a lot more muscle, at least to 200. Straight on stance with a very slight crouch. Has a bat wiggle to him and holds the bat over his back shoulder. Trigger is a leg kick and a cocking of the bat. Made a nice play on a hard rip at him by Heyward. Looks pretty slick with a slightly above average arm.


AB's
1) 1B on a soft groundball to the pitcher. Changeup down and well off the plate that fooled him, but used his speed to leg out a hit. 4.26 to 1st.

2009 Stats:

Luis Durango: San Diego Padres (UR). 5-9, 160. S/R. 23 yr old. Small frame that can get up to at least 175. (LH)Slightly open stance with a little crouch. Holds the bat over his his back shoulder at a 45 degree angle. Kind of choked up and understands his game, to hit the ball on the ground and run. Will look to bunt for hits in any count and utilizes the Rafael Furcal run up and slap swing as well. Trigger is a stride to square himself up when the pitcher begins his delivery, a stride where the heel hits the ground first (I assume to help him stay back) when the pitcher is about to release and a cocking of the bat. (RH) Fairly straight on stance where he has a slight crouch. Bat is held over his back shoulder fairly flat. Trigger is a step back, then a step forward and a cocking of the bat. Will bunt from this side as well, though he shows it early. Another guy that stole a base on a lefty pick off and just beat the ball there.

1) K Looking. Beautful FB from Drabek that started on the inner half and ran back over the inside corner.
2) Bunt 1B. Used his speed to beat Duffy to the bag by a ton. Fast Mother F****r. 3.53 from the right side, borderline unhuman.

Pedro Baez: Los Angeles Dodgers (13). 6-2, 195. R/R. 21 yr old. Medium frame that can get up to at least 215. Slightly crouched, fairly straight on stance. Very quiet stance and the bat just rests right above his back shoulder. Trigger is a stride and cocking of the bat. Good bat speed, but swing can get a little long. Looks to mash when ahead in the count and will be overaggressive at times. Needs to work on seeing the SL and letting it go.

Neftali Feliz: Texas Rangers (1). 6-3, 190. R/R. 21 yr old. Big frame that can get up to at least 205 comfortably. Worked completely out of the stretch. High 3/4 release. Generates very easy velocity and doesn't look like there is much effort there at all. Can be inconsistent with his arm slot and can drop down to 3/4. Very clean classic drop and drive delivery with no real red flags from the stretch. Appears to over throw at times, causing his command to suffer and his front shoulder to fly open. Fastball has good run in on righties with some sink. SL is a 2-7 with okay bite that he isn't yet consistent with. Not a real strikeout pitch, more of a get me over type offering. Change is pretty straight with some late fade from lefties and a little late sink, but not a real good offering. 2nd one looked better, but level of fade and sink isn't good enough to be a swing and miss offering. Will throw it to lefties as an out pitch and will throw it 3-2. Average command of his fastball (but good control) and will miss in the strike zone to hitters. Slider and change command can be inconsistent, but looks to be only slightly below average.

Yohan Flande: Philadelphia Phillies (UR). 6-2, 170. L/L. 23 yr old. Medium frame that can add a lot more muscle and get up to at least 200. Over the top release with a classic over the top delivery as a lefty. Very quiet delivery that generates very easy velocity. Slider is a kind of flat 10-4 with solid bite. Slider is his out pitch to lefties. Will throw 3-2 sliders. Primary fastball is a cutter with good cut and shows a little sink. Slider isn't quite good enough to be an out pitch in the majors and needs to tighten it as he advances. Change is a straight change that looks like his cutter of his hand and a has a little late fade from righties. Showed above average command of his repetoire, though none were above average major league offerings yet.


2nd: Cut (90-91), SL (82-85), CU (85)-CUT (Alvarez), SL (Flowers), CU (Espinosa)

Francisco Samuel: St. Louis Cardinals (21). 6-2, 185. R/R. 22 yr old. Medium frame that can add a lot more muscle and get up to at least 205. Over the top release. Drop and drive delivery with a slow leg kick and then almost a little hesitation right before he fires forward. High effort delivery. Worked from the stretch. Fastball has good run in on righties with some sink. Command can be inconsistent and can spike fastballs or just miss off the plate or paint the corner. Fastball has enough run that he can't consistently throw it for a strike. Really struggles to hold runners. Slider is a 2-7 with good bite that he is able to throw at a righties ankles with precision, but struggles to throw it for a strike. It can also show one plane cutter like movement at times.

Leyson Septimo: Arizona Diamondbacks (26). 6-0, 150. L/L. 24 yr old. Small frame that can add a lot more muscle, at least to 180. Drop and drive delivery with a high 3/4 arm slot and some cocking action on the back take. Can drop his arm slot on occasion and that flattens his slider out a little. Slider is a 11-5 with above average bite. FB is a straight 4-seam that is pretty explosive. Slider is his out pitch. Change has some fade from righties with good sink. Does not show an ability to throw strikes with it, but it could be an out pitch. He showed above average command of his FB-SL combo and below average command of his change.

Jhoulys Chacin: Colorado Rockies (2). 6-3, 200. R/R. 21 yr old. Medium frame that can add a little more muscle, probably about 220. Classic drop and drive delivery. Puts a lot of pressure on his back knee, as he puts almost all his weight on his back leg. Fastball has above average run in on righties with good sink. Fastball flashes plus with excellent movement. Changeup has good late sink and some fade from lefties and is a plus pitch. Just a filthy offering that can elicit a ton of swings and misses. Very late movement to it makes the hitter commit early. Curveball is a big breaking 12-6 that is sharp enough to be a strikeout pitch. Slider is a sharp 2-7 that has similar pitch f/x to his curve, but is sharp and has good bite. Will throw back-door 3-2 sliders to lefties.


4th: FB (90-94), CU (84-86), CB (81), SL (80-82) - FB (Young), 4 CU's (he only threw 4, everyone was a swing and miss, Espinosa 2, Young, Jennings), CB (Jennings)

2009 Stats:

Luis Perez: Toronto Blue Jays (17). 6-0, 205. L/L. 24 yr old. Medium frame that can add a little more muscle, probably 215 at most. 3/4 release. Quiet delivery, though it gets a little herky jerky right after separation. Starts with his foot already turned and is facing home plate. Glove breaks a little high, which adds both deception and stress to his arm. Out of the stretch, leg comes straight up. Whether that is to freeze a baserunner or not, it looks interesting as his body just hovers there for a second. SL is a sharp 10-4 with good bite and is a sweeping slider. Fastball has good run in on lefties with solid sink. Changeup falls off the table and has excellent late sink. Home run was a slider that stayed middle in for Castro to just annihlate. He showed above average command of all his offerings and just made the 1 mistake to Castro.


5th: FB (91-93), SL (80-81), CU (82-83) - FB (Jones), SL (Carter), CU (Carter)

2009 Stats:
AA: 6-6 3.18, 102-87-40-81

Chia-Jen Lo: Houston Astros (12). 5-11, 181. R/R. 23 yr old. Small frame that can probably get up to 195. Worked out of stretch. Typical Asian delivery with a slight pause at his leg kick. Generates a very good hip turn, allowing him to maximize his velocity. Over the top. Fastball has a little run in on righties with a little late sink. CB is a 12-6 with excellent late movement to it. Has above average depth and shows an ability to throw it for strikes. Threw one for a strike, then bounced or hung the others. Command can come in bunches. Threw 8 straight balls at one point. Did look like he got frustrated on the mound. Overall, he had average command of both his pitches.

• Lohse is a 6-2, 210 righty. The 30 year old has a medium frame that can add very little more muscle. He came from a high 3/4 release. His fastball is a sinker with some run in on righties and good sink and good late movement. His change has good fade from lefties with good sink. His slider is a 2-7 with okay bite. He will throw his change to righties. His curve is a big breaking 12-6 with above average depth.
