2009 AFL Roster Breakdown

The Arizona Fall League Rosters have been released. Let's take a mini breakdown of the teams (and remember, Futures Game scouting reports are on this site, so check out those for these players).

Mesa Solar Sox (Marlins, Cubs, Red Sox, Twins, Angels)
  • Youngest Player: Starlin Castro (Cubs), Mike Stanton (Marlins): 19
  • Oldest Player: Jay Buente (Marlins), Garrett Parcell (Marlins), Dustin Richardson (Red Sox): 25
  • Most Intriguing Pitcher: Andrew Cashner (Cubs): The former 1st round pick out of TCU will look to continue his sprint to the Cubs with this audition. He is 2-3, 2.58 across two levels.
  • Most Intriguing Position Player: Stanton. A strong fall league may put him in position to start for the Marlins next season due to their payroll situation.
  • Futures Game Alum: Castro, Stanton, Rene Tosoni (Twins)
  • TK's Seen Play: John Gaub (Marlins, unimpressed), Jay Voss (Marlins, unimpressed), Matt Dominguez (Marlins, believe below average starter is ceiling at 3B), Ryan Kalish (Red Sox, solid starter), Bryan Peterson (Marlins, 4th OF)

Peoria Javelinas (Brewers, Mariners, White Sox, Dodgers, Tigers)

  • Youngest Player: Carlos Triunfel (Mariners): 19
  • Oldest Player: A ton of 24 year olds
  • Most Intriguing Pitcher: Phillipe Aumont (Mariners): Another former 1st round pick, the behemoth (6-7, 220) has moved to the pen under the new regime and a strong showing here could propel him to the Mariners pen next season if he shows command.
  • Most Intriguing Position Player: Triunfel, Lorenzo Cain (Brewers): Both these prospects lost a lot of time due to injury and it will be interesting to see how they perform here. Also have to mention Dustin Ackley (Mariners).
  • Futures Game Alum: Dayan Viciedo (White Sox), Scott Sizemore (Tigers).
  • TK's Seen Play: None

Peoria Saguaros (Padres, Astros, Indians, Braves, Reds)

  • Youngest Player: Freddie Freeman (Braves): 19
  • Oldest Player: Evan Englebrook (Astros): 27
  • Most Intriguing Pitcher: Mike Minor (Braves): Will be interesting to see how a guy who was thought to be a signability pick holds his own against this level of competition.
  • Most Intriguing Position Player: Jason Heyward (Braves): If you know anything of minor league baseball, nothing else needs to be said.
  • Futures Game Alum: Chia-Jen Lo (Astros), Jason Castro (Astros), Freeman, Heyward, Chris Heisey (Reds), Nick Weglarz (Indians)
  • TK's Seen Play: Freeman (solid starter), Heyward (Star), Heisey (solid starter), Craig Kimbrel (Braves, future set-up man), Josh Judy (Indians, could be closer)

Phoenix Desert Dogs: (Orioles, Rays, Nationals, Athletics, Blue Jays)-roster missing about 10 pitchers

  • Youngest Player: Derek Norris (Nationals): 20
  • Oldest Player: Ryohei Tanaka (Orioles): 26
  • Most Intriguing Pitcher: Stephen Strasburg (Nationals): Duh.
  • Most Intriguing Position Player: J.P. Arencibia (Blue Jays): Amongst the top prospects in the organization, can he begin to lay claim to the catching job?
  • Futures Game Alum: Danny Espinosa (Nationals), Jemile Weeks (Athletics)
  • TK's Seen Play: Shawn O'Malley (Rays, fast as hell, utility infielder)

Scottsdale Scorpions (Diamondbacks, Phillies, Giants, Pirates, Rockies)- roster missing quite a few pitchers.

  • Youngest Player: Wilin Rosario (Rockies): 20
  • Oldest Player: Joe Martinez (Giants), Mike Zagurski, Tuffy Gosewich (Phillies): 26
  • Most Intriguing Pitcher: Danny Moskos (Pirates): Can the 1st round pick start living up to the promise?
  • Most Intriguing Position Player: Close race, but I will say Buster Posey (Giants): Can he prove that Bengie Molina is no longer needed and taht he is ready?
  • Futures Game Alum: None
  • TK's Seen Play: Martinez

Surprise Rafters (Rangers, Royals, Yankees, Cardinals, Mets) - roster missing about 10 pitchers

  • Youngest Player: Austin Romine (Yankees), Mike Moustakas (Royals), Ruben Tejada (Mets): 20
  • Oldest Player: Ben Swaggerty (Royals): 27
  • Most Intriguing Pitcher: Ian Kennedy (Yankees): Can he recover from an injury plagued season to begin his quest to getting a rotation spot?
  • Most Intriguing Position Player: Moustakas: When will the best high school hitter start proving it?
  • Futures Game Alum: Daryl Jones (Cardinals)
  • TK's Seen Play: Romine (Future Starter), Brandon Laird (Yankees, good power, awful body, painfully slow)

Chart Observations: 8/24 OAK @ SEA

2) Vin Mazzaro: 99 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 4 Fastballs (2 in 1st, 2 in 2nd), Slider (2nd)

  • Mazzaro came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties with good sink, a sharp 2-7 slider with good bite, a change with some fade from lefties with good sink and a 2-7 curve with below average depth.

1st: FB (91-95), SL (84-87)

2nd: FB (90-95), SL (86-87)

3rd: FB (91-93), SL (82-84), CB (80), CU (83)

4th: FB (91-95), SL (83-87), CB (77), CU (86)

5th: FB (92-93), SL (81-83), CU (84-85)

3) Jeff Gray: 32 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Gray came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties and some sink, a 2-7 slider with good bite and a 12-6 curve with slightly above average depth.

6th: FB (93-95), SL (86), CB (80)

7th: FB (94-96), SL (84-86), CB (78-80)

4) Sean White: 23 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Slider (8th)

  • White came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties with good sink, a change with good fade from lefties with good sink, a sharp 12-6 curve with slightly above average depth and a 1-7 slider with solid bite. He will throw his changeup to righties.

8th: FB (91-95), CU (84), SL (88), CB (79)

5) Jay Marshall: 18 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Marshall is a 6-5, 205 pound lefty. The 26 year old has a big frame that can get up to at least 215 comfortably and he is almost rail thin. He is a submariner. His slider is a 8-5 offering with solid bite. His fastball has a little tail in on righties with some late sink and his change has a little fade from righties, but is fairly straight. If Randy Choate can be a LOOGY, I think Marshall could do the same thing. He needs one good year and it will give him a lot of chances.

7th: FB (81-83), SL (70-71)

8th: FB (81-85), SL (71), CU (72-75)

6) David Aardsma: 12 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs.

Chart Observations: 8/23 DET @ OAK

1) Rick Porcello: 92 pitches. 4 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (2nd, 3rd), Changeup (3rd), Slider (5th)
  • Porcello has apparently scrapped his curveball for the rest of the season. This means the Tigers have taken the reins off and are allowing him to throw the plus slider he had when he was drafted. He came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties with good sink, a 2-7 slider with above average bite that was a little slurvy and was a big breaker and a change with good fade from lefties with above average sink. Even if Brandon Webb was healthy, he may have the best sinker in all of baseball. It has unbelievable tilt when on and can go from the belt to the knees of a hitter at 95.

1st: FB (92-94), SL (85)

2nd: FB (91-96), CU (82)

3rd: FB (88-94), SL (81-83), CU (81-83)

2) Brett Tomko: 87 pitches. 13 strikes swinging. 13 Fastballs (1-pitch pitcher much?, 3 in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5 in 5th, 3 in 6th)

  • Tomko came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties and good sink, a split with some dive, a 2-7 slider with good bite and a 12-6 curve with above average depth.

1st: FB (91-94), SL (83), CB (77), Split (84)

2nd: FB (91-93), SL (85), CB (78), Split (84-86)

5th: FB (89-94), SL (80-82), CB (79), Split (84)

6th: FB (91-93), SL (80-82), CB (74), Split (84)

3) Fu Te Ni: 33 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. Fastball, 2 Changeups (All in 8th)

  • Ni came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on lefties, a 10-4 slider with good bite and a change with some fade from righties with good sink.

6th: FB (87-89), SL (74-76)

7th: FB (87-89), SL (75-76), CU (79-80)

8th: FB (88-89), SL (74-75), CU (80-81)

4) Brad Ziegler: 23 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Ziegler came from a submarine release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties with good sink, a change with above average fade from lefties and good sink that he will throw to righties and a 4-8 slider with okay bite.

7th: FB (84-87), CU (75-76), SL (72-73)

5) Craig Breslow: 3 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Breslow came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on lefties, a change with some fade from lefties with sink that he will throw to righties and a 11-5 slider with good bite.

7th: FB (89), SL (84), CU (77)

6) Michael Wuertz: 21 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 3 Sliders (all in 8th)

  • Wuertz came from an over the top release and showed a 2-7 slider with good bite and a straight 4-seam fastball.

7th: SL (86-87)

8th: SL (86-89), FB (90-93)

7) Ryan Perry: 33 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs, 2 Sliders.

  • Perry came from a high 3/4 release and showed a straight 4-seam fastball and a slurvy 2-7 slider with good bite.

8th: FB (92-96), SL (82-85)

8) Jeff Gray: 10 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Gray is a 6-3, 195 pound righty. The 27 year old has a medium frame that is real long and skinny and shows the frame to get up to at least 215. He came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties with good sink and a 12-6 curve with average depth. Looks like he has a chance to be a solid middle reliever with his sinker.

9th: FB (91-95), CB (79)

Chart Observations: 8/23 SF @ COL

1) Tim Lincecum: 121 pitches. 13 strikes swinging. 6 Fastballs (1st, 3 in 2nd, 4th, 6th), 6 Changeups (2 in 1st, 2 in 3rd, 4th, 6th), Curveball (6th)
  • Lincecum came from an over the top release with a fastball with good run in on righties and some sink, a sharp 12-6 curve with above average depth, a change with good fade from lefties with good sink that flashes plus, plus sink (and it makes it unhittable) and a 2-7 slider with good bite. His change is thrown with a split grip. He began working out of the stretch primarily in the 6th (that is when I noticed) and he apparently does this when he is uncomfortable (he was throwing a no hitter at the time...)

1st: FB (93-95), CU (83-84), CB (74-78)

2nd: FB (90-96), CU (82-86), CB (74-76)

2) Ubaldo Jimenez: 119 pitches. 13 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs (2 in 1st, 7th), 5 Sliders (2 in 2nd, 2 in 4th, 6th), 5 Curveballs (1st, 2 in 3rd, 4th, 5th)

  • Jimenez came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties and a little sink, a change thrown with a split grip that has good fade from lefties and good sink, a 2-7 slider with solid bite and a 12-6 curve with slightly above average depth.

1st: FB (95-99), SL (86-89), CU (85-88), CB (79)

2nd: FB (94-96), SL (87-89), CU (85-86), CB (79)

6th: FB (97-99), SL (86-87), CU (87-88)

7th: FB (94-98), SL (86-88), CU (88-89)

8th: FB (95-97), SL (88-89), CU (85), CB (78-80)

3) Jeremy Affeldt: 22 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs.

  • Affeldt came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with some cut action and a sharp 11-5 curve with average depth.

8th: FB (95-97), CB (78-81)

4) Sergio Romo: 9 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Slider.

  • Romo came from a 3/4 release and showed a 3-8 slider with good bite and a fastball with some run in on righties.

8th: FB (91), SL (75-78)

5) Huston Street: 14 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Fastball, Slider.

  • Street came from a high 3/4 release and showed a 2-7 slider with good bite, a change with some fade from lefties and a little sink and a fastball with some run in on righties.

9th: FB (92-94), SL (84), CU (84)

Be jealous, I got paid to watch this entire series and got to watch this stellar pitching matchup. This series felt like playoff baseball and was phenomenal to watch.

Chart Observations: 8/23 STL @ SD

1) Cesar Carrillo: 72 pitches. 6 strikes swinging. 6 Changeups (4 in 2nd, 2 in 3rd)
  • Carrillo is a 6-3, 175 pound righty. The 25 year old has a medium frame that can add a ton more muscle. He is a very skinny kid with little definition. He came from an over the top release with a little cocking action and can rush his delivery at times, causing his arm to play catch up. His fastball has some run in on righties and some sink. His curve is a 12-6 offering with slightly above average depth. His change has some fade from lefties with above average sink that he will throw to righties and is his best off-speed offering. He will pitch backwards and trusts himsle fot throw his change for strikes (threw 3-2 changeups to Smoltz and to Holliday with the bases loaded). His fastball command is iffy and still has a tendency to miss up in the zone. I like his stuff, and he doesn't have as much development time as his age suggests due to arm injuries. I think he could be a late bloomer and be a solid # 4 in the back of a contender's rotation.

1st: FB (90-92), CB (75-78), CU (85-87)

2nd: FB (89-93), CB (75-79), CU (82-86)

3rd: FB (91-92), CB (80), CU (84-87)

2) John Smoltz: 75 pitches. 12 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (both in 2nd), 6 Sliders (2 in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 2 in 5th), 4 Splitters (both in 1st, 3rd, 5th)

  • Smoltz came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with a little run in on righties, a 2-7 slider with some bite, a split with above average dive and a 12-6 curve with slightly above average depth that he likes to throw to lefties to steal a strike. In the weaker league, he should dominate. The Padres just didn't jump on his fastball and choose to either wait for an off-speed offering (bad decision) or fouled it off. The fastball got pounded in the AL and was the cause for his release and it remains to be seen if this will occur eventually in the NL.

1st: FB (92-93), SL (84-87), Split (87-88), CB (79)

2nd: FB (92-94), SL (84-85), Split (87), CB (76)

3rd: FB (91-92), SL (82-85), Split (86-88)

4th: FB (90-92), SL (83-85), Split (86-88)

5th: FB (91-93), SL (83-86), Split (85-86)

3) Edward Mujica: 37 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (4th, 5th), 2 Sliders (4th, 5th), Splitter (4th)

  • Mujica came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with a little run in on righties and some sink, a split with above average dive and a 2-7 slider with solid bite. His 3rd inning velocity #'s are down because he came in the middle of an at-bat and had just started getting loose at the beginning of that at-bat, but Bud Black couldn't watch anymore of Carrillo.

3rd: FB (90), Split (85-87), SL (82-84)

4th: FB (92-94), Split (85-89), SL (84)

5th: FB (91-93), Split (87), SL (82-83)

1) Doug Fister: 86 pitches. 8 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (1st, 2nd), Curveball (2nd), 3 Sliders (all in 4th), 2 Changeups (5th, 6th)
  • Fister came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with some run in on righties and some sink, a change with some fade from lefties with above average sink, a big breaking 12-6 curve with above average depth and a 1-7 slider with solid bite. He will throw his change to righties.

2) Aaron Laffey: 113 pitches. 4 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs (2 in 1st, 2nd), Slider (5th)

  • Laffey is a 6-0, 185 pound lefty. The 24 year old has a medium frame that can add a little more muscle everywhere to about 195. He came from a high 3/4 release. His 2-seamer has good run in on lefties and good sink. His 4-seam has a little run in on lefties and a little sink. His slider is a 11-5 offering with good bite. His change is straight with some sink. I think he may also mix in an occasional cutter, but I am not completely sure on that. He is a back of the rotation starter or a groundball machine out of the bullpen against lefties with his 2-seam.

  • Messenger is a 6-6, 265 pound righty. The 28 year old has a big frame that is maxed out. He came from an over the top release. His fastball has some run in on righties. His curve is a 12-6 offering with above average depth while his change has some fade from lefties with good sink. He is no longer a closer, but he should be able to be a decent option as a middle reliever.

11th: FB (90-94), CB (77-78), CU (87)

Chart Observations: 8/23 SF @ COL

1) Joe Martinez: 73 pitches. 8 strikes swinging. 4 Fastballs (1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th), 4 Sliders (3rd, 3 in 4th)
  • Martinez is a 6-2, 195 pound righty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that can get up to 205 and is a fairly skinny kid. He came from a high 3/4 release. His fastball has good run in on righties and good sink. His change has some fade from lefties with some sink. His breaking pitch (we call it a curve, I am going to call it a slider) is a 2-7 offering with some bite. No real over powering pitch and is your typical sinker starting pitcher. He is in the right ballpark and division, but his upside is that of a back of the rotation starter.

  • De La Rosa came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on lefties, a change with some fade from righties with good sink, a 11-5 slider with good bite and a 11-5 curve with above average depth. Threw more sliders in this game then he normally does.

6) Franklin Morales: 10 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball.

  • Morales came from a high 3/4 release and showed a straight 4-seam fastball from a herky jerky delivery with limbs going every direction. He is a 23 year old lefty who stands 6-0 170 with a medium frame that can maybe add a little more muscle. Morales should be a dominant lefty reliever for awhile, if he doesn't return to starting.

7th: FB (94-95)

7) Matt Daley: 26 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs.

  • Daley came from a sidearm release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties and some sink, a 3-8 slider with solid bite and a change with some fade from lefties with some sink.

  • Betancourt came from an over the top release and showed a straight 4-seam fastball. He is a 6-2, 200 pound 34 year old righty who has a medium frame that is maxed out. Betancourt is what he is, a strong middle reliever that you would prefer not to be your closer.

8th: FB (93)

9) Matt Herges: 10 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball.

  • Herges is a 6-0, 210 pound righty. The 39 year old has a medium frame that won't be adding any more muscle. He came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties and good sink.

  • Davies is a 6-2, 220 pound righty. The 25 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He came from an over the top release. His fastball has a little run in on righties, but is fairly straight. His curve is a 12-6 offering with average depth and flashes above average depth. His change has some fade from lefties that he will throw to righties and it looks like a fastball out of his hand. His cutter has some cut. He falls behind constantly due to lack of fastball command and causes him to fall into predictable counts. Has the stuff of a # 3 starter, but needs to develop his fastball command greatly.

Chart Observations: 8/20: SEA @ DET

1) Ryan Rowland-Smith: 86 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (4th, 6th), 2 Curveballs (2nd, 4th), Slider (4th)
  • Rowland-Smith is a 6-3, 240 pound lefty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out with a muscular lower body. He came from an over the top release. His fastball is a sinker that can flatten out and it has a little run in on lefties with some sink. His curve is a big breaking 11-5 with above average depth. His change has some fade from righties with some sink. His slider is a 11-5 with solid bite that he will only throw to lefties. Solid back of the rotation starter, though I wouldn't expect too much more.

  • Miner came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties and some sink, a 2-7 slider with good bite, a change with above average fade that serves as his out pitch and he will throw it to righties and a 12-6 curve with above average depth.

  • Aardsma came from an over teh top erlease and showed a straight 4-seam fastball and a splitter with solid dive.

9th: FB (92-95), Split (86-87)

  • Alex Avila is a 5-11, 220 pound catcher. The 22 year old L/R has a small frame that is maxed out. He has a slightly open stance where he is up on his toe and has a bat tap. His trigger is a stride and a cocking of the bat. Avila has a very good looking swing that looks to be more of a gap to gap guy, but he should have solid power as well. I like his package offensively and he didn't jump out good or bad on defense. With only seeing him play half a game, I think he could be a major league starting catcher.

8/20: BOS @ TOR

1) Jon Lester: 105 pitches. 11 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs (1st, 2nd, 7th), 3 Cutters (2nd, 4th, 6th), 3 Curveballs (3rd, 4th, 8th), 2 Changeups (6th, 8th)

2) Brett Cecil: 85 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (1st, 3rd), 2 Sliders (both in 3rd), Changeup (5th)

  • Cecil is a 6-2, 225 pound lefty. The 23 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He came from a high 3/4 release and straightens his arm on the backtake, almost pointing it to the SS position, which may tip his pitches to the hitter. His fastball has some run in on lefties. His change has some fade from righties with a little sink. His slider is 11-5 with good bite while his curve is 11-5 with average depth. Looks like a # 4 starter right now with the potential to be either a # 2 or a dominant lefty set-up man. I bet he becomes a solid # 3 starter.

Extras: TOR, TB. Some CHW, MIN and CLE

1) Jack Egbert:
4/24: 54 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.
  • Egbert is a 6-3, 220 pound righty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He has a bizarre delivery, one in which he lifts his leg straight up with his toe down and bring the ball about behind his hip, almost like he wants to touch his butt with it. He came from a 3/4 release. His 2-seamer has good run in on righties and late sink while his 4-seam is pretty much dead straight. His curve is kind of a hanging 12-6 with slightly below average depth. Change has some fade from lefties with some sink that he will throw to righties. Sinker looks to flatten out the deeper into the game he gets, a bad idea. He may struggle to be a solid pitcher in AAA, let alone the majors.
5th: FB (87-90), CB (75-76)

2) Bill Murphy
:
4/24: 43 pitches. 4 strikes swinging. 2 Curveballs (both in 8th), 2 Changeups (both in 8th)
  • Murphy is a 5-11, 195 pound lefty. The 28 year old has a small frame that appears to be able to get up to about 205. He should be able to add a little more muscle in both the upper and lower body. Over the top release. His fastball has a little run in on lefties and a little sink and he can battle his fastball command at times. His curve is a 11-5 with below average depth and is a sweeping offering that has some good late action to it. His change has some fade from righties with a little sink. His command won't help him, but his sweeping curve gives him an outside chance to be a LOOGY. More of a 4-A arm.

8th: FB (88-90), CB (77-80), CU (83-85)

3) Bryan Bullington:
4/24: 25 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. Fastball, 2 Sliders.
  • Bullington is a 6-4, 210 pound righty. The 28 year old has a big frame that can add a little more muscle, likely to 215 or 220. He has a real athletic build and looks to be a fairly muscular guy. 3/4 release and features an arm action that shows the ball to the 2Bmen, putting extra stress on his shoulder. His fastball has a little late run in on righties, but is fairly straight. His slider is a 2-7 offering with solid bite and serves as his out pitch. More of a 4-A arm, as if your fastball sits in the high 80's to low 90's as a reliever, you need a dominant secondary pitch and his slider is just average.
9th: FB (88-92), SL (76-83)

4) Jesse Litsch
:
4/13: 52 pitches. 4 strikes swinging. 3 Cutters (all in 2nd), Curveball (1st)
  • Litsch is a 6-1, 215 pound righty. The 24 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He has a bigger lower body and looks to be fairly muscular. Has a strong lean forward right after the balance point in his delivery. Kicks his leg out and looks like his arm is forced to play catchup with the rest of his body. High 3/4 release. His fastball has some run in on righties with some sink. His cutter has some cut and sink. Will also mix in a dead straight 4-seam that will be in the low 90's. His curve is a 12-6 offering with slightly above average depth that can be a strikeout pitch. His change has some fade from lefties with some solid sink that he will throw to righties. Should be a solid # 4 starter for a contender if he can recover from his surgery.
1st: FB (87-93), Cut (86-87), CB (78)

5) Kevin Slowey
:
4/13: 88 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 3 Sliders (3rd, 2 in 5th), Fastball (6th), Changeup (6th)
  • Slowey is a 6-3, 195 pound righty. The 25 year old has a medium frame that can get up to at least 215. He has very skinny legs and a very skinny lower body that can add muscle everywhere. Over the top release. Very quiet mechanics, but his arm action looks like the elbow has a little extra stress put on it due to his hard finish. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. His curve is a 12-6 offering that is a late breaker with slightly below average depth. A bounced curve in the dirt appears to be his out pitch. His slider is a 2-7 with solid bite. His change has some fade from lefties with some sink that he will throw to righties. Another guy who is a solid # 4 starter if he can recover from his injury.

4/12: 113 pitches. 12 strikes swinging. 4 Fastballs (2 in 1st, 2 in 3rd), 8 Sliders (3 in 1st, 2nd, 3 in 4th, 5th)
  • Purcey is a 6-4, 240 pound lefty. The 27 year old has a big frame that is maxed out, but doesn't appear to be any bad weight and he carries the weight very well. Drop and drive from a 3/4, almost high 3/4 release. His fastball has a little late run in on lefties, but can be fairly straight. His slider is a late breaking 2-7 with okay bite that can flatten out and it serves as his out pitch. His curve is an 11-5 offering with average depth. His change has some sink and fade from righties. Extremely inconsistent with the command of his off-speed offerings and his fastball (just from the wind). Should be a solid middle of the rotation starter if he can ever figure out his command.
1st: FB (89-92), SL (82-85), CB (74)

7) Anthony Reyes:
4/12: 96 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 2 Changeups (1st, 3rd), Fastball (2nd)
  • Reyes is a 6-2, 230 pound righty. The 27 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. 3/4 release with pretty clean mechanics. His fastball has good run in on righties with some sink. His change has good fade from lefties with solid sink that he will throw to righties. His curve is a 12-6 offering with slightly above average depth. He has a good mix of off-speed offerings, but his lack of velocity will prevent him from being anymore then a # 5 starter.

8) Brian Burres:
4/30: 54 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 2 Sliders (2 in 2nd), Changeup (3rd)
  • Burres is a 6-2, 175 pound lefty. The 28 year old has a medium frame that can add a ton more muscle everywhere. He has the body of 16 year old high schooler. Over the top release with pretty clean mechanics and drop and drive delivery. Fastball has some run in on lefties. His curve is a 11-5 offering with average depth. His change has some fade from righties with little to no sink. His slider is a sharp 11-5 with good bite. Another guy who will struggle to be an effective pitcher at AAA, let alone the majors.

3rd: FB (87-90), CU (81), SL (82)

9) Troy Percival:
4/28: 16 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball
  • Percival is a 6-3, 255 pound righty. The 40 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. 3/4 release. His fastball has good run in on righties with some sink. His change is fairly straight and may fade a little from lefties that he will throw to righties. His curve is a 1-7 offering with average depth. I think he is done and it might be good for the Rays that he got hurt so Howell could become closer.

Chart Observations: 8/18 LAA @ CLE

1) Trevor Bell: 109 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (2nd, 3rd), 3 Changeups (2nd, 3rd, 5th)
  • Bell is a 6-2, 186 pound righty. The 22 year old has a medium frame that can get up to at least 205. He is real skinny with very skinny legs. He has a classic drop and drive delivery and kicks his lead leg out at the hitter. He has a fast windup with little wasted motion. He came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with some run in on righties and a little sink, a 2-7 slider with okay bite and a change with some fade from lefties with some sink and it flashed good sink. I think his future is in the pen, where he can be a solid middle reliever.

His fastball has a little run in on righties. His change has good fade from lefties with good sink that is his best offering and he will throw it to righties. His cutter has some cut. Solid middle reliever.

  • Boggs is a 6-4, 215 pound righty. The 25 year old has a big frame that can add a little more muscle. He came from a 3/4 release with a fast windup that is real scrunched up until his breaks. He straightens his arm on the backtake fairly hard as well. His fastball has above average run in on righties and some sink. His change has some fade from lefties and a little sink. His curve is a 1-7 pitch with solid depth. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with good bite that can move like a cutter at times. Solid pitcher, but likely no better then a # 4 or # 5 starter.

  • Billingsley came from an over the top release and showed a straight 4-seam fastball, a 12-6 curve with slightly above average depth, a cutter with some cut and a change with some fade from lefties with sink. He will throw get me over and out pitch curveballs.

  • Thompson is a 6-1, 190 pound righty. The 27 year old has a medium frame that can get up to 205. He came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties with good sink, a change with some fade from lefties with good sink and a 12-6 curve with below average depth. Long reliever is probably his best chance at sticking on a roster.

6th: FB (87-88), CU (80-82), CB (79)

7th: FB (87-89), CU (80-82), CB (77-79)

8th: FB (88-91), SL (73-75)

7) Blake Hawksworth: 13 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Blake came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with good run in on righties and solid sink and a change with above average sink and good fade from lefties that he will throw to righties.

8th: FB (92-93), CU (81-83)

8) Jonathan Broxton: 20 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs, Slider (All in 9th)

  • Broxton came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with some run in on righties and a sharp 2-7 slider with okay bite.

Extras (Mostly NYY, Some CLE, A SEA, A NYM)

1) Andy Pettitte:
6/13: 104 pitches. 10 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs (1st, 2nd, 5th), 6 Curveballs (3rd, 4 in 4th, 5th), Changeup (5th)
  • Pettitte is a 6-5, 225 pound lefty. The 37 year old has a big frame that is maxed out with a muscular lower half. He came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on lefties. His change has good late from righties with a little sink. His cutter has good cut and sink. His curve is a 11-5 offering with above average depth. He has an above average pick-off move. Solid # 3 starter still and looks to be able to continue doing this for another couple of years.

2nd: FB (88-90), Cut (84-87), CU (80-82), CB (75-77)

2) Fernando Nieve:

6/13: 108 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. Fastball (1st), Slider (6th), Changeup (7th)

  • Nieve is a 6-0, 220 pound righty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that his maxed out with real big thighs. He came from a 3/4 release. His fastball has a little run in on righties, but is very straight. His change is straight with a little sink. His slider is a 2-7 offering with good late bite. His curve is 12-6 with below average depth that he tips by throwing from a slightly higher release point. He will throw his change to righties. I prefer him as a 1-inning reliever, where he can go at guys with his FB-SL combo and not worry about his other 2 pitches. As a starter, I think he is a # 5.

1st: FB (92-95), CU (85)

2nd: FB (92-95), CU (86-87), SL (84), CB (79)

3) Alfredo Aceves:

6/13: 36 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball (7th)

  • Aceves is a 6-3, 220 pound righty. The 26 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He came from a 3/4 release and has a drop and drive delivery that is real deliberate (i.e. slow) in the beginning. He taps his turn leg about 3 times before turning into the release point, which appears to be a way to get himself going and to stay back. His fastball has some run in on righties and some sink. His cutter has some cut. His change has a little fade from lefties with a little sink that he will throw to righties. His curve is a 12-6 offering with average depth. He seems like a solid long reliever to me, not too much more.

6th: FB (91-93), Cut (90), CB (80), CU (81-86)

7th: FB (90-92), Cut (87-89), CB (77-79), CU (81-85)

4) Jonathan Albaladejo:

4/6: 13 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Jonathan is a 6-5, 260 pound righty. The 26 year old has a big frame that is maxed out. He came from a 3/4 release in a max effort delivery. He lands very hard on his front leg and appears to put a little extra stress on his right shoulder by overly finishing every pitch. His fastball has good run in on righties with good sink. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with okay bite. His curve is a 12-6 offering with slightly above average depth. Typical middle reliever, and one that will likely be riding a bus back and forth from AAA.

5th: FB (92), SL (83)

6th: FB (90-92), SL (82-83), CB (72-73)

5) Damaso Marte:

4/6: 10 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

4/18: 23 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs.

  • Marte is a 6-2, 215 pound lefty. The 34 year old has a medium frame that can add a little more muscle. He came from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with a little run in on lefties, but fairly straight and a 10-5 slider with good bite that can flash above average bite. Looks like a LOOGY to me, and one that is on the downturn.\

6) Sergio Mitre:

8/15: 92 pitches. 6 strikes swinging. 2 Fastballs (both in 6th), 4 Changeups (1st, 3rd, 2 in 5th)

  • Mitre is a 6-3, 225 pound righty. The 28 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He came from a 3/4 release in a delivery that generates a very good hip turn. His fastball has some run in on righties with a little sink. His slider is a 2-7 pitch with solid bite while his change has some fade from lefties with a little sink. # 5 starter at best and definitely not a good starter in the AL East.

7) Lucas French:

8/15: 107 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs (4th, 5th), 2 Changeups (both in 1st)

  • French is a 6-4, 220 pound lefty. The 23 year old has a big frame that can add a little more muscle and get up to maybe 235. He came from a high 3/4 release and straightens his arm on the backtake, similar to Ubaldo Jimenez and he has a very fast windup. His fastball has some run in on lefties. His change has some fade from righties and solid sink and is his best off-speed offering that he will throw to righties. His slider is 11-5 with okay bite. French's upside is that of a # 4 starter and he is likely pitching close to it now.

8) Edwar Ramirez:

4/18: 58 pitches. 4 strikes swinging. 4 Changeups (3 in 4th, 5th)

5/5: 4 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. 2 Changeups

  • Ramirez is a 6-3, 165 pound righty. The 28 year old has a medium frame that can add a lot more muscle. He comes from a 3/4 release and showed a fastball with some run in on righties, a change with above average fade from lefties with good sink that is late breaking and a 2-7 slider with good bite. The command of all his pitches can be spotty and he falls behind in the count a lot, causing him to throw his below average fastball. If I am an NL team, I try to acquire him, as I think he could be an above average middle reliever outside the AL East.

9) Masa Kobayashi:

4/18: 20 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Kobayashi is a 6-0, 195 pound righty. The 35 year old has small frame that is maxed out. He has a typicaly Japanese windup with a pause at the balance point and limbs flying in different directions. He came from an over the top release and showed a 2-seam fastball with some run in on righties and a little sink and a 2-7 slider with a little bite. 4-A reliever.

7th: FB (90-92), SL (83)

8th: FB (89-92), SL (84)

10) Vinnie Chulk:

4/18: 19 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Chulk is a 6-2, 195 pound righty. The 30 year old has a medium frame that can get up to at least 205. He came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with a little late sink, a 2-7 slider with solid bite and a change with some fade from lefties with good sink. A guy who should be a solid middle reliever, but just struggles to put it together for some reason.

Chart Observations: 8/17 MIN @ TEX

1) Francisco Liriano: 61 pitches. 5 strikes swinging. 3 Sliders (all in 1st), Changeup (1st), Fastball (2nd)
  • Liriano came from a high 3/4 release and showed a 11-5 slider with good bite, a change with some fade from righties with a little sink and a fastball with some run in on lefties with sink. He will throw 2-0 sliders and 3-1 changeups and sliders. The slider is his out pitch and he will normally throw it gloveside and bounce it in the dirt just after the plate.

Extra Reports: Mostly BOS

1) Hunter Jones:
4/26: 8 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball.
5/3: 12 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball (7th)
  • Jones is a 6-4, 235 pound lefty. The 25 year old has a big frame that is maxed out and has a little bad weight, resembling a little bit of Dennys Reyes (not a good thing). He came from an over the top release and has more of a leg lift then a leg kick. His fastball is a pretty straight 4-seam while his slider is a 11-5 offering with solid bite that looks more like a curveball. Looks more like a 4-A arm to me.

2) Michael Bowden:

4/26: 31 pitches. 4 strikes swinging. 4 Fastballs (3 in 7th, 8th)

  • Bowden is a 6-3, 215 pound righty. The 22 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He is a big, muscular kid with a strong lower body and big thighs. He has interesting mechanics. His leg comes straight up and he breaking into cocking his arm, showing the ball to the hitter for a period of time. He holds his glove under his chin and it may touch his chin. He is classic drop and drive with his legs. While his mechanics are a little bizarre, doesn't appear to be any extra stress put on his arm. He came from an over the top release. His fastball has a little late run in on righties, but his command of the pitch can be spotty and he will miss up in the zone with it. His change has a little fade from lefties with okay sink and is a late moving offering. Hard to get a read on him, since this was a 2 IP relief appearance, but looks to be a guy that can be a factor, as the hitters didn't look comfortable in the box against him.

3) Mark Melancon:

4/26: 22 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Curveball (8th)

8/6: 28 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Curveball (7th)

  • Melancon is a 6-2, 215 pound righty. The 24 year old has a medium frame that can get up to 230 and he really doesn't look 6-2. He stays real scrunched up until break and his front knee stays bent the whole time. He comes from an over the top release. His fastball is a straight 4-seam that flashes some cut and or sink. His curve is a sharp 12-6 pitch with above average depth and is a true out pitch. His change has okay fade from lefties and okay sink that he will throw to righties. I like him as a late inning option due to the dominant curveball, but he will need to improve the command of his fastball to be a closer or setup man due to its straightness.

4) Javier Lopez:

4/8: 20 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Slider

4/14: 25 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. 3 Fastballs.

  • Lopez is a 6-4, 220 pound lefty. The 32 year old has a big frame that can add a lot more muscle, especially in the lower half. He is a sidearmer. His fastball has a little run in on lefties and a little sink and his change moves just like his fastball, just a little slower. He will drop down to submarine to throw sliders, which is a 9-4 offering with okay bite. He tipped the slider in the 4/8 game by dropping that low everytime and in the 4/14 game he threw from that release point every pitch. Only chance is as a LOOGY and could probably be successful outside the AL East.

5) Dana Eveland:

4/14: 108 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. Fastball (1st), Slider (1st), Changeup (3rd)

  • Eveland is a 6-1, 225 pound lefty. The 25 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out and may have some bad weight. He came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with solid sink and solid cut and he also threw a 2-seamer that had some run in on lefties and a straight 4-seamer. His slider is 11-5 with good bite. His change was straight with some sink and he will throw it in 3-2 counts. His curveball is a sharp 11-5 with average depth. Eveland looks like his upside is that of a # 5 starter and if he can't succeed in Oakland, he likely won't succeed anywhere.

6) Sean Gallagher:

4/14: 10 pitches. 0 strikes swinging.

  • Gallagher is a 6-2, 235 pound righty. The 23 year old has a medium frame that is maxed out. He came from an over the top release and showed a fastball with a little run in on righties and solid sink and a 2-7 slider with okay bite. Gallagher was acquired by the Padres and looks to be a solid shot to be a big leaguer in some role.

7) Billy Traber:

8/6: 70 pitches. 4 strikes swinging. 3 Changeups (5th), Slider (5th)

  • Traber is a 6-5, 205 pound lefty. The 29 year old has a big frame that can get up to at least 225. He is real long and lanky and is really herky jerky with arms and everything bounces up and down. He is a sidearmer with a 3-8 slider with okay bite, a fastball with a little run in on lefties and a change with a little fade and sink from righties. 4-A arm for sure.

8) Anthony Claggett:

8/6: 28 pitches. 2 strikes swinging. Fastball, Slider.

  • Claggett is a 6-3, 195 pound righty. The 25 year old has a medium frame that can get up to 215. He has real long arms and is lanky with skinny legs. He came from a high 3/4 release. His fastball has good run in on righties and some sink. His slider is a sharp 2-7 with good bite, but it can be flat and extremely hittable at times. His change is straight with a little sink. Claggett has solid stuff, but the results have not been there in those appearances. I think he could be a guy who does have some success, but he likely will need to get out of the pressure cooker that is New York to gain that success.

9) Enrique Gonzalez:

8/8: 43 pitches. 1 strike swinging. Fastball (7th)

  • Gonzalez is a 5-10, 225 pound righty. The 27 year old has a small frame that is maxed out and definitely has some bad weight in the mid section and is almost a Rich Garces wanna-be frame wise. He came from a high 3/4 release and showed a fastball with solid sink and some run in on righties. His slider is a 2-7 with okay bite. His change has some fade from lefties with a little sink. He is a 4-A guy.

7th: FB (90-93), SL (88-89)

8th: FB (89-91), SL (84-88), CU (83-86)

10) Fernando Cabrera:

8/13: 15 pitches. 3 strikes swinging. Fastball, 2 Sliders.

  • Cabrera came from a 6-4, 225 pound righty. The 27 year old has a big frame that can add more muscle and get up to 235. He sets his hands over his head and comes from a high 3/4 release. His fastball is a straight 4-seam and his slider is a 2-7 with good bite. He has a max effort delivery that will make it difficult to consistently throw strikes. Command, not stuff, has always been the question about Cabrera and he could still be a quality middle reliever in the bigs.
